A man has been rushed to hospital with serious injuries after plunging “several floors” inside a packed city centre bar in Birmingham. Emergency services swarmed Colmore Row on Sunday evening following the terrifying incident at Henman and Cooper, with police taping off the entrance and standing guard at the door.
A steady stream of revellers were turned away from the venue as the drama unfolded, while shocked onlookers gathered nearby watching emergency crews at work. At the height of the incident, BirminghamLive reported at least eight emergency vehicles – including police cars and ambulances – which lined the busy city centre street, after earlier reports of multiple units racing to the scene. The man is understood to have fallen “a number of floors” inside the building, which features a spiral staircase and rooftop terrace at the popular cocktail bar. Workers were seen holding up material at the entrance in a bid to shield scene from the public, as officers moved in and out of the venue.
Birmingham Live reporter Harry Leach spotted police speaking to staff inside the venue where the incident it beleived to have taken place.
Just after 8pm, a spokesperson for West Midlands Police said: “We’re currently in Colmore Row Birmingham city centre, after a man is understood to have fallen a number of floors within a building.
“He has been taken to hospital with serious injuries.
“We’re currently at the scene with emergency service colleagues as we seek to establish the full circumstances.”
One woman drinking at a nearby bar told BirminghamLive she was left “overwhelmed” by the scale of the response.
She said: “I heard pretty soon that a man had been hurt. It looked so serious.
“I just hope he’s gonna be okay. You’d think he was just out enjoying himself so it’s a bit mad.”
The incident happened close to the Council House, just before the road becomes pedestrianised, in one of the busiest parts of Birmingham’s business district.
Later in the evening, the scene was scaled back, with two officers remaining at the entrance as investigations continued behind the police tape.
The bar is not expected to reopen tonight.
