Netflix has unveiled a first look at its upcoming teen thriller series The Body, while also announcing the release date.
The eight-part series, which follows a dance troupe at a Catholic girls school who begin having prophetic visions and “set off mass hysteria in their town”, is due to be released on the platform on 11 November.
One new first-look image (above) shows Sofia Wylie and Nnamdi Asomugha in action as Grace Franklin and Father Samuel Franklin, respectively.
Another (below) shows Geena Meszaros as Lisbeth, while a third (below) shows Kristina Bogic as Anya, Sara Boustany as Elise and Emily Roman as Claire.
The cast also features Louisa Krause, Shirley Chen, Jackson Kelly and The Traitors alum Gabby Windey, while Kyra Pierce, Phallon Pierce, Marcel Ruiz, Orlando Norman, Ashley Madekwe, Motell Foster, Cale Ambrozic, Anna Tierney, Chloe Longname, Sarah Abbott, Emily Roman, Michela Luci, Bella Neuspiel, Julia Lowe and Christine Solomon also star.
The show has been created by Quinn Shephard, who has described the series as “a love letter to all the ’90s and Y2K teen movies and erotic thrillers” she watched growing up.
“Movies like Carrie, Jennifer’s Body, Heavenly Creatures, and even Mean Girls [are all inspirations], but with a grounded lens,” she explained in an interview with Netflix’s Tudum.
She added that she’s “always been interested in the idea of girlhood as a religious experience.”
She continued: “This story is definitely my way of putting a playful spin on all the nightmares of my own teenage-dom. Tonally, I would describe the show as gritty camp. It’s a raunchy teen psychodrama with a dash of Catholic horror.”
Shephard also serves as showrunner and helmed the first episode, while executive producers include Peter Chernin, Amy Israel and Josh Stern for North Road, Riley Keough, Gina Gammell and Sacha Ben Harroche for Felix Culpa, and Blair Breard.
The Body is due to be released on Netflix on 11 November
