Yeah. And then we had to deal with Sam. Everything we wanted—I’d nearly have Yoko agreeing to something, then Sam would get hold of it, the decision would be reversed.

Oh my God. Well, this is the story: Jann’s involvement in all these different people’s lives, Lennon and Ono, and their fates, and their records getting reviewed by his people.

But it’s kind of clear. I mean, I saw U2’s latest album—glowing review [in Rolling Stone]. And I thought, I don’t think it’s that good.

Well, Jann and Bono are two peas in a pod.

They’re very good mates. And Bono is a lovely, lovely boy. Jann could be friends with John, very good friends with Bono. But I think it’s a little bit visible, a little bit obvious. I saw that and thought, They’re going to get a great review. It’s going to be great, whether [the album is] great or not.

Let me just tell you, as an aside—this is just a fan thing to say. My favorite post-Beatles album by any Beatle is Ram. I love that record so much.

It’s a funny thing, because it was all done in the shadow of the Beatles and the breakup and everything. So I never really reckoned with those albums. I put my heart into them. I really wanted to be who I was. I was this guy living in Scotland with that ram there—that was one of my sheep I’m holding. That was after I sheared it. But I never really liked [the record] because—

I know. I’ve read that.

All my stuff, you know. Still struggling with liking it because it’s post-Beatles.

See, I think that’s a pretty Beatles-y record.

My nephew, for instance, who’s now a big, grown man with kids of his own, he said, “Ram man, it’s great.” And so certainly I see it through his eyes. I go, “Yeah? It’s good?” “Yeah,” he says, “it’s good. It’s good. Look at me. It’s good.” And now we’re remastering these things. I’m listening to him going, “You know what? It’s not bad.”

And those opening lyrics in that first song: “You took your lucky break and broke it in two.” Whenever I hear it, I think you’re talking to John.

That’s the one song I was talking—no, there’s another one, “Dear Friend.” I only sort of addressed him in a couple. That one was not savage, but that’s what that was.

Well, it sounds like you’re not doing a whitewash.

No. I want it to be the real deal. And in some ways, it’s the history of that era. Jann’s a great mythologizer—he loves his role as the guy who will determine the rock-and-roll pantheon.

It’s not to do with him, it’s always “the people down the corridor.” I was on David Geffen’s boat—will you dig? Robbie Robertson was on there. We get invited periodically. We just go for a couple of days. It’s so, sort of, luxury. Robbie Robertson was on, and he said, “I hear Brian Epstein’s getting inducted.”
