However, it was at Wales House, the central Team Wales hub, where the family sat down to speak with athletes about the Games, and presenter Jones’ question to the children prompted William to intervene.

Princess Catherine revealed that five-time Olympic gold-medal cyclist Dame Laura Kenny, whom the family had just been introduced to, attempted to persuade her and her husband to try their hand at track cycling. She then disclosed her response was: “Be careful what you wish for, as they want to put us on a tandem bike in the velodrome.”

Jones then asked all three of the children a question.

“Would you like to see mum and dad on a tandem in the velodrome later?” he asked, with only George responding rather promptly: “No.”

His son’s blunt reply prompted William to intervene and make a candid admission. He joked: “We embarrass you enough as it is.”

Cycling wasn’t the only subject on the agenda during the visit to Wales House. The family also met with twin Welsh gymnasts Abigail and Emily Roper, who both claimed bronze medals last week at the Games.

Princess Catherine was quick to draw her youngest son, Louis, into a conversation with the pair and said: “Louis, you’re perfecting your handstand at the moment.”

With his arms crossed, he replied: “A bit. But Charlotte says I’m not very good.”

The family began their day at the Games watching Jamaica pull off a remarkable upset in the netball semi-finals, defeating Australia at The Hydro.

A trip to the Sir Chris Hoy Velodrome followed later, where they were introduced to Hoy himself as well as Dame Laura. The Duke and Duchess of Edinburgh were also in attendance.

The judo finals at the Scottish Event Campus rounded off the sporting action, and in addition to the live events, their gathering at Wales House was succeeded by a visit to youth charity SportsAid, of which Princess Catherine is a patron. The family also greeted several volunteers and competitors outside The Hydro.
