South Carolina Jury Finds Store Owner Not Guilty of Murder in Killing of Black Teen

South Carolina Jury Finds Store Owner Not Guilty of Murder in Killing of Black Teen

COLUMBIA, S.C (AP) — A South Carolina jury on Monday found a store owner not guilty of murder in the 2023 shooting of a Black 14-year-old. The jury returned the verdict for Chikei Rick Chow. Chow, 61, who is Asian, shot Cyrus Carmack-Belton in the back after chasing him from his convenience store in Columbia. He maintained he acted to defend his son. The killing sent waves of anguish and grief through the African American community in Richland County, where nearly half the population is Black. After the verdict was read, sobs and cries of distress could be heard coming from Carmack-Belton’s family seated in the gallery. Chow sat silently frozen before slowly bowing his head onto his interlocked hands. Defense lawyer Jack Swerling said they’re very pleased with the verdict but also feel for Carmack-Belton’s family. “My heart goes out to them, but 14-year-old kid should not be roaming the streets of Columbia or South Carolina with semiautomatic pistol loaded and ready to fire,” he said. Carmack-Belton’s family did not speak to reporters outside …

Trump Jumps Into Republican Primaries for Governor in South Carolina, Iowa and Oklahoma

COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) — President Donald Trump endorsed three Republican gubernatorial candidates Friday, wading into contests in South Carolina, Iowa and Oklahoma that have pitted allies against each other in a fierce competition for their party leader’s blessing. In a trio of social media posts, Trump gave his backing to South Carolina Lt. Gov. Pamela Evette, Iowa Rep. Randy Feenstra and former Oklahoma state senator Mike Mazzei as primary elections approach. Iowa’s primary is Tuesday, South Carolina’s is on June 9 and Oklahoma’s is on June 16. All three states are having their first competitive Republican gubernatorial primaries in years. For two terms, Evette has served alongside Gov. Henry McMaster, one of Trump’s earliest backers during his first presidential campaign. Earlier this year, the long-serving governor endorsed his No. 2, telegraphing to some that Trump’s backing could be next. On Friday, Trump expressed both appreciation for Evette and the state she represents, noting that she stumped for him in 2024. He also said “A BIG added plus” for her campaign is that Henry McMaster Jr. …

Meg Kinnard/AP hide caption toggle caption Meg Kinnard/AP The majority-Black district held for 34 years by South Carolina Democratic Rep. Jim Clyburn will survive intact, for now, after Republican state lawmakers rejected a plan to redraw congressional maps. South Carolina was the latest Southern state attempting to redraw district lines after the U.S. Supreme Court weakened a key section of the Voting Rights Act that protected majority-Black districts. The proposed map backed by President Trump, which state senators declined to advance on Tuesday, would have targeted Clyburn, the lone Democrat in South Carolina’s congressional delegation and an institution in state and national politics. “We have someone in the White House that wants Republicans to ignore the Constitutional principles for which this current map was drawn,” Clyburn wrote on X. “A critical number of Republicans did not believe in putting a man over the law. Today, members …

Trump’s Redistricting Push Suffers Setbacks in Alabama, South Carolina

May 26 (Reuters) – President Donald Trump’s push for Republican-led states to draw electoral maps more favorable to his party ahead of November’s midterm elections suffered twin setbacks on Tuesday, when efforts in South Carolina and Alabama to reshape U.S. House of Representatives districts were stymied. In a rare break with Trump by members of his own party, several Republican state senators in South Carolina voted with Democrats to abandon a new map aimed at dismantling the U.S. House district held by congressman James Clyburn, a Black Democrat first elected to the seat more than three ‌decades ago. Separately, a panel of three federal judges blocked Alabama ‌Republicans from installing a new map that would eliminate one of the state’s two districts with major Black populations, ruling that state lawmakers intentionally discriminated against Black voters in reconfiguring the boundaries. At Trump’s urging, Republicans in several Southern states have rushed to implement new maps following a U.S. Supreme Court decision in April that weakened protections for U.S. House districts with significant Black or Latino populations. Debra Pierce holds up a picture of Stanley Sears, her brother, while standing in the yard of the mobile home he was renovating before his death in 2024. Pierce believes North Carolina’s Martin County needs higher-level emergency services and a hospital. Sarah Jane Tribble/KFF Health News hide caption toggle caption Sarah Jane Tribble/KFF Health News WILLIAMSTON, N.C. — Two years after her brother’s death, Debra Pierce still wonders whether the 50-year-old would have survived his heart attack if her local hospital hadn’t closed. “The sad thing is we’ll never know if he could have been saved that night or not, because we don’t have a higher level of care in this county,” Pierce said as she stood outside the mobile home where she last hugged her brother. Emergency crews from a neighboring town worked on Stanley Sears for a half hour but couldn’t revive him for the long drive to the closest hospital, records show. In the tall grass — which would be mowed if Sears were still alive — Pierce swiped through the photos …

Chip Somodevilla/Getty Images hide caption toggle caption Chip Somodevilla/Getty Images Swing voters in North Carolina say they are frustrated with President Trump and the state of the economy, but aren’t ready to abandon him or his party as the midterms inch closer. NPR observed two online focus groups on Tuesday featuring 12 voters in North Carolina who voted for Joe Biden in 2020 and then Trump in 2024. These focus groups were conducted by messaging and market research firms Engagious and Sago as part of the Swing Voter Project. Seven of the voters who participated identified as independents, four said they were Republicans, and one identified as a Democrat. That’s a more Republican-leaning cohort than prior months’ focus groups. Here are three takeaways: 1. Trump is viewed as out-of-touch, but not weak Half of these voters said they overall disapprove of the job Trump is doing. And a lot of that frustration has to do with the fact they do not think Trump …

In a Peanuts strip from 1952, Charlie Brown stands before a rack of comic books with titles like GOUGE and STAB!, ready to revel in gore. In 1987 the artist Magdalena Suarez Frimkess appropriated this darkly funny scene for a wall ceramic created with her late husband, Michael Frimkess. The grid of four tiles features an illustration of a fanciful townhouse, along with drawings inspired by the comic book Archie’s Madhouse and antic cells from Donald Duck and The Katzenjammer Kids. In the top left corner stands Charlie Brown, arms extended, exclaiming, “What a beautiful gory layout!” The panel, which hints at the chaos lurking behind pleasant domestic façades, is currently on view in a small, potent exhibition of the ninety-six-year-old artist’s work at David Zwirner in Los Angeles. Organized by the ceramicist Shio Kusaka, it includes more than three dozen drawings and ceramic pieces dating back to 1970. Elegantly arranged on a long white plinth are Suarez Frimkess’s hand-formed cups, plates, teapots, and figurines, all proudly wearing their imperfections, as well as works she …
