Jess Cartner-Morley on fashion: forget the church fete vibes, the brooch is now fashion’s badge of honour | Fashion

I have arrived in my brooch era about two decades ahead of schedule. I had brooches earmarked for a later life stage, accessories that would chime with The Archers, gardening, possibly solving the odd crime in the village, that sort of thing. The Guardian’s journalism is independent. We will earn a commission if you buy something through an affiliate link. Learn more. But in an unexpected turn of events, I am already the correct age to wear a brooch. Not because I’m old, but because brooches have changed. They have cast off their church fete vibe and become cool. Zendaya wore a diamond serpent brooch pinned to the back of her white jacket to last year’s Met Gala. At a press conference before the recent Mexico City premiere of The Devil Wears Prada 2, Meryl Streep added no fewer than six brooches to the lapel of her pillarbox red Dolce & Gabbana suit. Pedro Pascal wore a silk Chanel camellia the size of a sunflower to the Oscars. The brooch has escaped from Granny’s jewellery box, climbed out …

OnlyFans’ First-Gen Creators Are Retiring—and Some Are Begging You to Forget They Exist

OnlyFans’ First-Gen Creators Are Retiring—and Some Are Begging You to Forget They Exist

On April 28, just before noon, Win White logged onto X and posted a series of messages to his 65,000 followers who, until that moment, were mostly unaware of his past as an OnlyFans creator. “I’m asking humbly that we all refrain from sharing content from before. If you see it, save it … cool,” he wrote. “I know where I’ve been and I think I’m entitled to a life after that at least.” That morning White, 29, had received several DMs about an old clip of him making rounds. Though he has done his best to separate his old life from his new one—last year he deleted his OnlyFans account and the separate X account where he posted content—it often has a habit of catching up with him. “All that work that I did for OnlyFans, I did out in California. I don’t really talk about it on this page. So I panicked,” White tells WIRED. Still, he had a hunch how his request might be received, and how nasty the responses could get. …

The pet I’ll never forget: Crispin, the big-headed canary | Birds

I was around four years old when my parents bought me Crispin, my first pet. A handsome yellow canary, Crispin was bad-tempered and behaved like an alpha male. He would spend hours preening. I thought he was enchanting. A gentle female canary, Mariflor, arrived soon after. She became Crispin’s other half and the mother of their chicks, Maribel and Quintin. Having a canary family compensated for my lack of siblings and extended family. It gave me a sense of responsibility and filled my life with joy. Every day, I would let the canaries out of their cage and they were free to roam around the flat. Crispin’s favourite place was the globe in my bedroom. Standing imposingly, he regularly gave his opinion on global affairs by pooping on countries whose governments he disapproved of. At least that’s how it seemed to me as a child. It was the 1980s, the time of the cold war, and my parents, who were political exiles of the Chilean dictator Augusto Pinochet, had temporarily settled in Venezuela. My canaries’ …

Forget Palm Beach. Wellington Has Plenty of Wealth—and All The Horses

Forget Palm Beach. Wellington Has Plenty of Wealth—and All The Horses

As much as F1 needs an equally good driver and car, equestrian sports have two extremely important variables: the horse and the rider. And unlike in F1, the second piece of the puzzle is a living, breathing, intelligent animal with its own mind and moods. “There’s two athletes you need to train,” 34-year-old Jessica Springsteen, daughter of Bruce, tells me as we sit outside in the Florida humidity by the bougainvilleas at her barn. Springsteen is an accomplished professional athlete on the elite circuit: In 2021 she won a silver medal at the Tokyo Olympics for team jumping on her stallion Don Juan van de Donkhoeve. She has seven horses in Wellington. Some she shows on. Others are in development: While Springsteen herself has the experience to guide a horse over jumps higher than five feet, she needs a horse that knows (and wants) to do so as well. That takes years of training. So while she’s competing in Wellington, she and her team are also preparing her next generation of equines. Unlike most athletes, …

The pet I’ll never forget: Merlin the sassy pig, who helped me meet my husband | Pets

We have lots of animals in our home in Sacramento, California – a dog, two chicks, a pigeon, a bearded dragon, three rats and two rescue cows. But our pig, Merlin, is special. I had a pig obsession for a while. I remember going to visit some animal sanctuaries and getting emotional when I saw the pigs. There’s just something about them that I felt a connection to. I knew how smart they were. I remember telling myself that one day I’d have a pig. Merlin is a mini Vietnamese pot-bellied pig. He was cute as a button when I adopted him in March 2020, when he was just two and a half months old. He loves to cuddle but he can be a bit sassy. If he doesn’t get his way he likes to unplug devices and slam doors. He likes to wear a propeller cap and go on walks; it’s like having an 180lb toddler. We were living in an apartment when we adopted Merlin and I’m surprised we didn’t receive a noise …

Forget meal prep—how I get up to 30g of protein after a workout using only Trader Joe’s snacks

Forget meal prep—how I get up to 30g of protein after a workout using only Trader Joe’s snacks

Once I finish a workout, I want a quick and easy snack—something that will satisfy and fuel me, but that doesn’t require me to cook. It’s got to have 20g to 30g of protein to support my recovery and help me stay full until my next meal. After many shopping trips to Trader Joe’s and even more workouts, I’ve settled on a handful of high-protein snacks that are convenient, satiating and enjoyable. I always keep them on hand for post-run refueling and busy afternoons where I need something quick that supports my health and fitness goals, and I often combine snacks to ensure I’m getting the right balance of protein and carbs. Article continues below You may like What that balance looks like depends on the workout. After a shorter or less intense session, I usually try to get in around 15-20g of protein paired with a small source of carbs, like yogurt with a sprinkle of granola or a meat stick and a piece of fruit. After a longer run or more intense workout, …

Forget Stranger Danger: Teach ‘Safe Adults Don’t Ask Kids For Help’

Forget Stranger Danger: Teach ‘Safe Adults Don’t Ask Kids For Help’

Many of us grew up being warned of “stranger danger” which was, on reflection, a bit vague – and also pretty terrifying. Some parents still use it today, however experts are increasingly advising people to shun the whole “stranger danger” line as it could heighten social anxiety and limit kids’ ability to develop healthy interpersonal skills. Instead, experts are advising to teach about “safe adults” and “tricky people”. Pattie Fitzgerald, founder of safelyeverafter.com, previously told HuffPost that a tricky person is someone who tricks a child or parent into believing they’re a safe person. They might ask a child for help, tell them to keep a secret from their parents, try to arrange alone time with them, touch their body excessively and/or inappropriately, or invade their personal space. And on the subject of adults asking children for help, Nikki Jurcutz, an ex-paramedic who runs Tiny Hearts Education, recently warned that children would “willingly go with a stranger tomorrow” if they were asked: “Can you help me find my puppy?” In an Instagram post, she said: …

Forget Florence: six of the best towns in Tuscany to escape overtourism | Tuscany holidays

Forget Florence: six of the best towns in Tuscany to escape overtourism | Tuscany holidays

First, it was Barcelona, Venice and Dubrovnik. Now, Florence has joined the most overtouristed destinations in the world: its 365,000 inhabitants shared their city last year with 4.6 million visitors. The director of the city’s Accademia gallery – home to Michelangelo’s David – talked in 2024 about “hit and run” tourism, describing visitors “on a quick in-and-out mission to take selfies … trampling the city without contributing anything”. Local author Margherita Calderoni describes Via Camillo Cavour, a street leading to the Duomo, as a “rancid soup” of chain restaurants and “shops selling plastic trinkets from who knows where”. Although steps are being taken – the city council has introduced a ban on new short-term lets and is promoting sights in lesser-known neighbourhoods – tackling overtourism is a challenge. And other Tuscan cities, such as Siena and San Gimignano, are suffering too. But beyond these honeypots, Italy’s fifth-largest region is full of glories, with not a takeaway chain or selfie stick in sight. Here are six of my favourites. For architecture: Monteriggioni To hit Monteriggioni during …

The pet I’ll never forget: Benny the cat, who climbed into my shopping bag – then shared my baths | Cats

The pet I’ll never forget: Benny the cat, who climbed into my shopping bag – then shared my baths | Cats

I suppose you could say I got Benny from the shops. In 2006, he and his brother ambushed me outside a supermarket in Bahrain. They were trying to climb into the bags of shopping I was carrying to get at the food they could smell. Immediately smitten, I took them in. It was the start of a 16-year relationship that saw Benny and Buster accompany me to Kenya, Qatar, back to Bahrain, then finally to Manchester. I used to say they had seen more countries than most people. I was an advertising creative director and followed the work where I could get it. It was an interesting but lonely life and my new pals, who were about three months old, immediately made a difference. I was besotted with them, but it was Benny, with his endearing quirks, who really stole my heart.
