Senate Confirms Trump’s Pick to Lead Federal Land Agency as Drilling and Mining Expand

Senate Confirms Trump’s Pick to Lead Federal Land Agency as Drilling and Mining Expand

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (AP) — The U.S. Senate confirmed President Donald Trump’s pick to oversee the management of a quarter-billion acres of public lands on Monday, as the administration pushes ahead with more mining and drilling while reversing conservation plans. Former congressman Steve Pearce will lead the Interior Department’s Bureau of Land Management following Monday’s 46-43 confirmation vote. Pearce’s background as a Republican Party leader in New Mexico known for supporting public land leasing and industry made him a contentious pick. Democrats and environmental groups were strongly opposed. He attempted to assuage any fears during his February confirmation hearing by noting that he grew up on a family farm where conserving the land and water was a necessity. “The security and economic health of the country, especially the western states, rests squarely with the BLM,” he testified. “We can and must balance the different uses of public land. Local economies and future generations depend on us doing our job right.” The land bureau has about 10,000 employees who manage roughly 10% of land in the U.S. …

Trump allies lead thousands in prayer to ‘rededicate’ America to God on National Mall

WASHINGTON (RNS) — As House Speaker Mike Johnson stood before a crowd of thousands on the National Mall on Sunday (May 17), he did something not altogether unusual for the outspoken Southern Baptist: He closed his eyes, bowed his head and prayed. But as Johnson began speaking, his frame dwarfed by enormous screens featuring patriotic and religious imagery, he made clear this particular prayer was meant to hold more weight than usual. “Just as we in the beginning dedicated this land to your most holy name, today, here, Lord, in this 250th year of American independence, we hereby rededicate the United States of America as one nation under God,” said Johnson, a Republican, to cheers. It was one of many such moments at the daylong event, titled “Rededicate 250: A National Jubilee Of Prayer, Praise & Thanksgiving.” The effort was one of several projects overseen by Freedom 250, an organization partnering with the White House and other branches of the federal government to celebrate the 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence. …

Keanu Reeves to Lead Voice Cast of ‘Hidari,’ Japanese Stop-Motion Samurai Epic From Director Masashi Kawamura

Keanu Reeves to Lead Voice Cast of ‘Hidari,’ Japanese Stop-Motion Samurai Epic From Director Masashi Kawamura

Keanu Reeves is set to lend his voice to the title role of Hidari, a Japanese stop-motion action feature in development from director Masashi Kawamura, the project’s producers announced Sunday in Cannes. The feature is an expansion of Kawamura’s viral 2023 proof-of-concept short of the same name, which has racked up close to 5 million views on YouTube since its release. Loosely inspired by the legend of Jingoro Hidari, a near-mythic master carpenter from Japan’s Edo period, the film follows the artisan as he loses his father figure, his fiancée and his right arm to a betrayal tied to the secret reconstruction of Edo Castle — then channels his grief into vengeance, wielding a series of mechanical prosthetic arms of his own design alongside his loyal animated wooden companion, the Sleeping Cat. Kawamura has also written the screenplay. “I’m thrilled by the vision behind Hidari,” Reeves said in a statement. “From the proof of concept to the developed script, the team has created something truly extraordinary. It has all the makings of an exceptional film …

David Tennant teases Rivals season 2 moment will lead to “destructive” outcome

*Warning: This article contains spoilers for the first three episodes of Rivals, which are available to stream now on Disney Plus.* By the end of the first three episodes of Rivals season 2, Tony Baddingham (David Tennant) is more sinister than ever as he’s not only managed to take down Rupert’s (Alex Hassell) political and TV career, but he’s also now got his sights firmly set on Maud O’Hara (Victoria Smurfit). Across the first batch of episodes, we’ve seen the outcome of Maud’s season 1 decision to go to London in order to pursue her dream acting career. Bored of living in the shadows of her husband Declan (Aidan Turner), her starring role in A Doll’s House is anything but – that is until one fateful evening performance when she gets to be the star of the show, the very same evening that Tony and Monica (Claire Rushbrook) happen to be in the audience. While Tony’s not fussed for seeing the wife of his rival take to the stage, Monica is keen to support one …

The 4th Linux kernel flaw this month can lead to stolen SSH host keys

ismagilov/iStock/Getty Images Plus Follow ZDNET: Add us as a preferred source on Google. ZDNET’s key takeaways Another day, another Linux bug.  There is a patch out now.   However, it’s not available yet in most distros.  Linux’s latest kernel flaw doesn’t have a fancy name; it’s just called “ssh‑keysign‑pwn.” It’s the fourth high‑profile local security hole to hit Linux in just a few weeks. This one enables ordinary users to quietly read some of the most sensitive files on a system, including Secure Shell (SSH) host private keys and the shadow password file. The vulnerability gets its “ssh‑keysign‑pwn” nickname from one of the main exploitation paths: abusing OpenSSH’s ssh-keysign helper binary. Keysign -keysign is used for host‑based authentication and typically runs setuid root, opening the system’s SSH host keys before dropping privileges to complete its work. Also: The third major Linux kernel flaw in two weeks has been found – thanks to AI Just what we needed. Another annoying and potentially dangerous Linux bug. The flaw explained Security researchers at security company Qualys disclosed CVE‑2026‑46333, …

Faith communities must lead on the hunger crisis — but they can’t substitute for US policy

Faith communities must lead on the hunger crisis — but they can’t substitute for US policy

(RNS) — This past week, a single mother in America’s Southwest tried to find out why her food assistance benefits — once a reliable safeguard for her family’s dining table — were gone. She is not alone. Recent federal legislation has enacted the deepest cuts to the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program in the program’s history — a reduction of nearly $187 billion over 10 years. The Farm Bill that just passed the House of Representatives locks in those cuts through 2031, without restoring a dollar of what was lost. And the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s annual household food security reports — 30 years of data measuring the state of hunger in America — have been discontinued.  Nationwide, 1 in 5 children — nearly 14 million kids — are not getting the food they need, a problem especially prevalent in families with single mothers. This was not inevitable. In 2021, child poverty dropped by nearly half over the year prior, to its lowest level ever recorded, according to the U.S. Census Bureau. That’s because the government …

Aronimink Proving to Be a Major Test at PGA Championship. Four Players Share Early Lead at 67

Aronimink Proving to Be a Major Test at PGA Championship. Four Players Share Early Lead at 67

NEWTOWN SQUARE, Pa. (AP) — The chilly start to the PGA Championship made it feel like May. The test Aronimink provided was more like June in a U.S. Open, with no one better than 3-under 67 among the early starters and Masters champion Rory McIlroy giving a stink assessment of his 74. Aldrich Potgieter, Stephan Jaeger, Min Woo Lee and Ryo Hisatsune mixed in enough birdies to offset mistakes, each of them at 67. Xander Schauffele, who set the major championship scoring record in the 2024 PGA Championship at Valhalla with a 21-under 263, opened with a 68 and was pleased. “I think really, really thick rough and wind and really difficult greens and tucked pin locations is why you’re seeing what you may feel like are higher scores,” Schauffele said. That also was the recipe for McIlroy, a bad mix for the Masters champion. He struggled out of the damp, dense rough. He struggled on the greens. He closed with four straight bogeys and described his round in one word that translates loosely to …

Danny Dyer, Emily Atack and David Tennant lead stars at glitzy Rivals series two premiere in London

“I think now down to the amazing writing by Dominic (Treadwell-Collins) and Laura (Wade) and the other writers they’ve really captured a woman like her and given her nuance and shown that we can really celebrate these flawed women and understand, not condone them and their crazy behaviours, but kind of learn to understand them a little bit more, rather than just vilify them,” Atack said.
