Danish deputy PM to lead coalition talks after Frederiksen’s effort fails – POLITICO

The king of Denmark late Friday charged Deputy Prime Minister Troels Lund Poulsen, leader of the center-right Venstre party, with trying to form the next government after Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen failed to build a new coalition. After a near deadlock in Denmark’s March 24 election, Frederiksen has been leading coalition negotiations in a bid to secure what would be her third term in office. Frederiksen’s Social Democrats secured the most votes in the parliamentary election, but the party fell far short of a majority in the Folketing, the Danish parliament. Denmark’s royal household issued a statement Friday night announcing that King Frederik X “has requested the Chairman of the Liberal Party, Troels Lund Poulsen, to lead negotiations on the formation of a government that does not involve the participation of the Social Democrats and the Moderates.” Frederiksen on Friday evening acknowledged the risk she might lose her post, telling the press: “The Danes gave the Social Democrats a worse election result and have composed the Folketing in such a way that a center-right government could well …

Wembanyama Gives the Spurs Another Gem in a 115-108 Win Over the T-Wolves to Take a 2-1 Series Lead

Wembanyama Gives the Spurs Another Gem in a 115-108 Win Over the T-Wolves to Take a 2-1 Series Lead

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — Victor Wembanyama delivered another masterpiece with 39 points, 15 rebounds and more game-wrecking defense for the San Antonio Spurs, who took a 2-1 lead in the second-round NBA playoff series with a 115-108 victory over the Minnesota Timberwolves on Friday night. Wembanyama went 13 of 18 from the floor and 10 of 12 from the line, adding five blocks and a full night of paint deterrence as the Spurs won their second straight game after dropping the opener at home. “It was like holding the ship together. We had a lead. We didn’t need to rush. We needed to be consistent,” Wembanyama said. De’Aaron Fox scored 17 points, and Stephon Castle had 13 points and 12 assists with a team-high plus-17 rating. Anthony Edwards had 32 points and 14 rebounds and Naz Reid added 18 points and nine rebounds for the Wolves, whose defense kept them alive after a woeful start but allowed the Spurs to shoot 6 for 10 from 3-point range in the pivotal third quarter. Minnesota will host Game …

How Ancient Greek Philosophy Can Lead to Wanting Less and Living Better

How Ancient Greek Philosophy Can Lead to Wanting Less and Living Better

Summary Ancient Greeks balanced the urge for more (pleonexia) with the virtue of self-control (sophrosyne) to live a measured life. Stoicism teaches using possessions without attachment, ensuring you can lose things without losing your inner peace and identity. Epicureanism focuses on reducing desire itself, finding stable pleasure by wanting little and lacking nothing truly essential. The art of living well involves letting go of the superfluous and cultivating a life measured by sufficiency, not accumulation. Show more   The urge for “more” isn’t new. Ancient Greeks saw how people leaned toward accumulating wealth, status, possessions, even knowledge, and treated it not as sin but as a matter of proportion. How much is enough, and what happens when wanting more warps one’s sense of measure? Concepts like sophrosyne and pleonexia helped philosophers show how excess could distort the self. Their varied responses, from Stoic detachment to Epicurean simplicity, all suggested that desire is natural, provided it’s shaped rather than allowed to run wild.   Pleonexia and the Problem of “More Than One’s Share” Sketch of Plato’s Symposium, by Pietro Testa, …

Cameron Young Makes Big Putts to Take Early Lead at Cadillac Championship in Tour’s Doral Return

Cameron Young Makes Big Putts to Take Early Lead at Cadillac Championship in Tour’s Doral Return

DORAL, Fla. (AP) — Cameron Young made, by his own count, about a billion feet worth of putts. Jordan Spieth was, to use his own word, a nerd. Both approaches were optimal in the opening round of the Cadillac Championship. Young shot a bogey-free round of 8-under 64 on Thursday, taking a one-shot lead over Spieth and Alex Smalley at Trump International Doral to open the $20 million signature event — the first PGA Tour event at the course in 10 years. “I think you can be pretty aggressive into a lot of the greens,” Young said. “They’re not particularly firm. I feel like the ball’s sitting when you need it to. So, it’s more just about avoiding some of the big mistakes. There’s a couple spots where the rough’s a little longer and obviously there’s tons of water out there.” Young made some putts — about 98 feet worth, to be exact — and his round got rolling with barely any putt at all. He hit his approach from 154 yards to about an …

Why Nuns Lead Longer, Healthier Lives

Why Nuns Lead Longer, Healthier Lives

In a recent episode of Waitrose’s Dish podcast, Bridgerton star Nicola Coughlan said that she used to check Rip.ie (an Irish site which tracks and publishes deaths) in her previous work at an optician’s. She said many of the people who came into her shop were older, and she found out some had sadly passed away when ringing about missed appointments. So, she devised a system of checking the site and noting who had passed instead. But she noticed an anomaly. “We got a lot of nuns,” she said in a viral Instagram clip. “So you’d be like, Sister Ignatius, born 1932… I started… in my head, guessing if people were dead,” and checking the site in anticipation. “They were always alive. Nuns are immortal.” That’s not literally true, at least in the secular sense – but some science suggests they do live longer and healthier than many of us. Why might nuns live longer, healthier lives? Before her death in 2023, a French nun named Sister André was the oldest living person in the …

Bob Mortimer and Paul Whitehouse lead tributes to dog Ted from Gone Fishing

Bob Mortimer and Paul Whitehouse have led tributes to their much-loved Gone Fishing companion, Ted the dog. The beloved canine, who regularly accompanied the comedians on their angling adventures on their BBC series, has passed away and will make his last appearance in the forthcoming ninth series, the BBC confirmed. Mortimer said in a statement: “So very, very sad. Lovely Ted, the best companion and the greatest little chum. Going to miss him so much.. and away boss.” Whitehouse also paid tribute to Ted, saying: “Bye bye Ted old friend. He wasn’t a dog, he was a species all of his own. He’s gone to the great briefcase emporium in the sky. We will really miss you mate.” Ted was owned by Gone Fishing executive producer Lisa Clark after she rescued him from a dog’s home in Surrey in 2013. Clark said: “Ted was a much-loved family pet as well as a treasured companion to Paul and Bob on Gone Fishing. He took fame in his little stride and loved nothing better than messing around …

Ghost MOTs: drivers warned over fake certificates that lead to huge repair bills | Scams

Ghost MOTs: drivers warned over fake certificates that lead to huge repair bills | Scams

You have just bought a secondhand car. It was older than you wanted, but were reassured because it had recently passed its MOT. Within a few days, you notice a problem with the steering and take it into a garage to be checked. As well as that issue, they find the tread depth of the tyres is so low it should not have passed the test. You have been the victim of a “ghost MOT”. Although you have a certificate clearly saying the vehicle was successfully checked over, no such examination ever took place. The fraud happens when a garage, or a mechanic, claims to have done the inspections but has simply logged in the system that the vehicle has passed. In some instances, this can happen without the vehicle even being in the garage. The MOT tester should have checked for wear to items such as tyres. Photograph: David Burton/Alamy The MOT, designed to ensure minimum standards in vehicles, usually more than three years old, is a test carried out in 23,000 accredited garages …
