6 Must-See Artworks on Digital Art Streaming Platform CIFRA

Editor’s Note: This article was produced in partnership with CIFRA. As the art world continues to grapple with how best to exhibit, preserve, and monetize digital work, a new streaming platform aims to do more than simply replicate the white cube online. CIFRA positions itself as a platform made for artists working in video, sound, and other time-based media. For years, digital artists have been constrained by social media platforms that privilege speed, virality, and short-form display over context and craft. CIFRA attempts to address that by allowing artists to upload complex works, list provenance, construct portfolios, and connect with curators and collectors in a purpose-built environment. Audience participation and artist discovery on CIFRA moves beyond the scroll of our increasingly algorithmic internetscape. Public playlists allow the public to act as curators while navigational tools and curator spotlights help artists and audiences go into deep dives on genre, artists, and history, returning power back to users. Headquartered in Dubai and developed in collaboration with researchers and art experts around the world, CIFRA is betting that …

A Must-See Lotty Rosenfeld Retrospective Is a Playbook for Fighting Fascism

A Must-See Lotty Rosenfeld Retrospective Is a Playbook for Fighting Fascism

In the 1980s, two women—a German Jew and a Palestinian—met in Chile, where they were both born to families of immigrants. Together, they crafted some of the most powerful antifascist art of the era, collaborating on installations and documenting one another’s performances. One of those women, the artist Lotty Rosenfeld, is the subject of a revelatory retrospective at Columbia University’s Wallach Art Gallery, on view through March 15. The other, her close friend, the writer Diamela Eltit, is present throughout. Highlighting female friendship was a feminist intervention on the part of the show’s curators, Julia Bryan-Wilson and Natalia Brizuela, but it would also have been difficult to tell Rosenfeld’s story any other way. Working in Chile during the Pinochet dictatorship (1973–90), Rosenfeld forged a community through art at a time when simply gathering was illegal and many artists were forced into exile. Related Articles She got around these constraints by crafting clandestine gestures she tactically rendered illegible, sending coded signals of solidarity and building coalitions in unconventional ways. The show opens with one such gesture. …

10 Must-See Chapels in Italy

10 Must-See Chapels in Italy

While most flock to museums to experience world-famous artworks, some of the most influential pieces reside outside institutions—especially in Italy, where, during the Renaissance, a number of wealthy patrons commissioned works of art in smaller chapels. Those chapels were intended as places where their family legacies could live on after their deaths. Many of them still contain some of the most incredible examples of art and architecture; most are open to the public. There are many chapels, both within and beyond Italy. Which ones are most essential? Below is a list of the ones that cannot be missed. Scrovegni Chapel in Padua Image Credit: Steve Christo/Corbis via Getty Images Constructed by Enrico Scrovegni to atone for the sin of usury—lending money at unreasonably high interest rates to the benefit of the lender—the Scrovegni Chapel boasts the most important frescos painted by Giotto, who painted religious scenes during the 14th century with naturalism, illusionism, and earthly settings that were unusual for their time. The fresco cycle narrates the history of salvation, including the life of the …

Janet Jackson is finally back in control of her rightful legacy in must-see docuseries

Janet Jackson is finally back in control of her rightful legacy in must-see docuseries

Lifetime’s “Janet Jackson.” is a choreographed dance partnering thunder and calm, appropriate to its subject and her life. Most of what we know of about her story has been told through external sources or incomplete passes like the “New York Times Presents”‘ recent analysis of the so-called “wardrobe malfunction” at the 2004 Super Bowl Halftime Show. But the reality of Janet Jackson contradicts the picture conservatives and the entertainment media painted in the wake of that incident. She is a notoriously private person, which her four-part documentary’s director Ben Hirsch acknowledges by contrasting her recessive personality against the screams and passion that greeted her everywhere she went at the height of her celebrity. When such clips tear through the calm of the performer’s confessionals, we appreciate how jarring fame is for a woman raised to be a performer despite her desire for a normal life – something she could never have as the daughter of Joseph Jackson and Michael’s little sister.
