Winston Churchill note dropped by Bank of England after being told he was ‘elitist’ | UK | News

Wartime hero Sir Winston Churchill could be replaced by an image of an animal (Image: Getty) Wartime hero Sir Winston Churchill was erased from our nation’s currency after the Bank of England was told he was “elitist and divisive”, it is claimed. The Old Lady of Threadneedle Street, a once common nickname for the bank, announced it was phasing out historic titans such as Churchill, Alan Turing and Jane Austen in favour of wildlife because to keep ahead of fraudsters getting better at replicating faces. And the Governor of the Bank of England wrote in the Telegraph this week: “The Bank’s foremost objective is the security of our banknotes, which includes tackling the threat from counterfeiting.” But a Freedom of Information request by the Telegraph has uncovered revealing findings from an October 2025 report commissioned by the bank with the market research consultancy, Savanta. The King has featured on notes since 2024 (Image: Getty) According to the paper, the report found historical figures represented “a backward-looking vision of the UK that carries too great a …

Believe Me is more impactful for one reason – true crime dramas, take note

This article contains discussion of subjects including sexual assault and rape that some readers may find upsetting. The debate as to what makes a “good” true crime drama continues to rage on as the genre boasts more shows in its catalogue than ever before. There’s an argument that none of these series should really be classified as good or bad, seeing as they’re depicting real-life tragedy. Many also think that the genre is more concerned with its psychologically confusing perpetrators than anything else. Plainly speaking, should we really be consuming so much of it and in turn, feeding the TV machine it spawns from? The whole idea around “why would someone do something so atrocious?” is the ember that continues to burn bright within the genre, with plenty of shows preferring to veer on the side of sensationalism at the expense of their responsibility to the victims. Thankfully, the same can’t be said of ITV’s Believe Me. The channel’s latest venture into the genre premieres tonight and Believe Me may only be four episodes long, …

Purported Epstein suicide note unsealed by judge : NPR

The Department of Justice has released millions of documents and images from criminal investigations into Jeffrey Epstein since December, but his purported suicide note was sealed in an unrelated court case until this week. Jon Elswick/AP hide caption toggle caption Jon Elswick/AP A suicide note purportedly written by Jeffrey Epstein in prison has been publicly released, nearly seven years after Epstein’s former cellmate said he found it. District Judge Kenneth Karas unsealed the one-page note Wednesday in response to a legal petition from the New York Times, which reported on its existence last week. NPR has not independently verified the authenticity of the note. The five sentences on a sheet of lined paper read in part: “It is a treat to be able to choose one’s time to say goodbye. Watcha want me to do — Bust out cryin!! NO FUN — NOT WORTH IT!!” Nicholas Tartaglione has said he discovered the note while sharing a cell with Epstein at the now-closed Metropolitan Correctional Center. The two overlapped for about two weeks in July 2019 …

Jeffrey Epstein ‘Suicide Note’ Emerges

A federal judge on Wednesday unsealed a purported suicide note attributed to Jeffrey Epstein, written before his first reported incident in July 2019 and discovered by his then-cellmate, Nicholas Tartaglione, tucked inside a graphic novel. The undated, unsigned document – released as part of Tartaglione’s unrelated criminal case docket – contains lines such as “They investigated me for month – found NOTHING!!!” and references to saying goodbye. It has been kept under seal for nearly seven years. “They investigated me for months. Found NOTHING!! It is a treat to be able to choose one’s time to say goodbye. Watcha want me to do- Bust out cryin!! NO FUN–NOT WORTH IT!!” The note’s release comes amid a flood of Epstein-related document dumps in 2025–2026, yet it does little to quiet the persistent, deeply unsettling questions about how Epstein actually died on August 10, 2019, inside the Metropolitan Correctional Center (MCC) in Manhattan. Official ruling: suicide by hanging. Public consensus, reinforced by every major new tranche of files: something about that story has never added up – and …

Purported Jeffrey Epstein suicide note echoed messages he sent earlier

WASHINGTON — A federal judge in New York unsealed a suicide note Wednesday purportedly written by Jeffrey Epstein in July 2019, before a failed suicide attempt that came weeks after he was taken into federal custody on sex trafficking charges. The disgraced financier ultimately died weeks later in the same New York City facility in what was ruled a suicide. Although the note’s authenticity has not been established, it contains an apparent reference to a line from a 1931 “Little Rascals” film that Epstein had used in at least two prior email messages, according to the trove of Epstein documents released by the U.S. Department of Justice this year in response to the bipartisan Epstein Files Transparency Act. In the short handwritten note released Wednesday, Epstein allegedly wrote, “They investigated me for month — Found nuthing!!!” The note concludes, “Whatcha want me to do — Bust out cryin!! No Fun – Not Worth It!!” It was a phrase Epstein had used before. In a September 2016 email to his brother, Mark, he wrote, “whtchoo want me todo …

The hidden detail you missed from Kate Middleton’s special note on Anzac Day

The hidden detail you missed from Kate Middleton’s special note on Anzac Day

The Princess of Wales made a solo appearance at Anzac Day on Saturday, honouring all Australians and New Zealanders who have lost their lives in conflict and to recognise all those who have served. While Kate made a poised appearance at the event, there may be one detail royal fans missed. While laying a wreath on behalf of her father-in-law, the King, Kate attached a personal message which read: “In memory of the Australian and New Zealand soldiers who made the ultimate sacrifice for our freedom,” signing the message, Catherine ahead of her husband, Prince William’s signature.  © AFP via Getty ImagesKate signed her name first before William’s signature Catherine signing her name first is something we rarely see, but it’s likely she signed the message this way as she was there on behalf of the Wales family.  Another interesting detail is that, as previously mentioned, Kate was actually laying the wreath on behalf of King Charles, so it’s interesting that the message was not signed from His Majesty. Perfectly poised Kate Kate made a sombre …

Editor’s note for Image’s April 2026 issue

This story is part of Image’s April’s Thresholds issue, a tour of L.A. architecture as it’s actually experienced. I lived part of my teen years in Brasília, the capital built from scratch whose architecture and urban planning have drawn equal parts fascination and disdain. Over the years I’ve grown accustomed to comments about how “wild” the spaceship-like buildings designed by Oscar Niemeyer must have looked, how “alienating” the car-centric city must have been. But when I first heard these kinds of comments, I was admittedly surprised, because my memories of living in the city were much more mundane — eating hot dogs on the dusty sidewalks, hanging with friends at the base of our apartment building, movie-hopping at the mall. In other words, I was just living my life. Now that I live in L.A., I sometimes hear echoes of what I used to hear about Brasília. They are both places with a mythic allure that nonetheless draw the same kinds of criticisms. How do you live in such a sprawling city where you have …
