The former IRS agent convicted in a deadly catfishing scheme targeting his wife and a stranger was sentenced Friday to a mandatory life term in prison. Brendan Banfield, 40, was found guilty in February on two counts of aggravated murder, one count of using a firearm in committing a felony, and child endangerment in the 2023 killings of Christine Banfield and Joseph Ryan at the Banfields’ home in Herndon, Virginia. The couple’s au pair involved in the plot, Juliana Peres Magalhaes, pleaded guilty to manslaughter and was sentenced to 10 years in prison. Peres Magalhaes initially faced charges of second-degree murder but was given the lesser punishment after she cooperated with authorities and testified for the prosecution at Banfield’s trial in Northern Virginia. One of the world’s rarest parakeets has seen its numbers surge thanks to a pair of super breeders now responsible for more than 10 percent of the total population. The New Zealand native kakariki karaka – or orange-fronted parakeet – is critically endangered and has twice been declared extinct, only to be rediscovered. There are around 450 of the birds left, mainly in sanctuaries and predator-free islands but also in wild populations. Parents Nacho and Trixie were paired up in 2024 at the Isaac Conservation and Wildlife Trust in Christchurch and have since produced 55 chicks, including 33 this year alone. Wildlife manager Leigh Percasky praised “super-mum” Trixie. “The breeding season has ended and yet she’s still producing eggs and raising chicks,” Percasky said. Across the first six months of 2026, an unusually high number of theatrically released films have seemed like paired companion pieces, feature-length notes on a theme that can or should be watched back-to-back. This isn’t all that uncommon: Trends crop up in filmmaking all the time, as potential narratives emerge from real-life events and cultural obsessions. Sometimes this happens because the studios are trying to capitalize on a moment, like when “The Minecraft Movie” coasted in on the fumes of “The Super Mario Bros. Movie.” Other cinematic companions are inadvertent and more thoughtful, woven together like the harmonies of a duet. This year, “Exit 8” and the upcoming “Backrooms” toyed with a less-is-more approach to claustrophobic, liminal horror. “Ready or Not 2” and “They Will Kill You” took one last swing at the well-worn eat-the-rich occult subgenre. “Mother Mary” and “The Moment” explored the natural endpoint of pop-star fixation in the age of the internet. First came the suspicious, unexpected text message. Included in the communication was a return phone number and a plea to call “immediately.” By evening’s end, a frazzled Ventura senior citizen — during a cloak-and-dagger assignation — had uttered a secret code to a person who claimed to be law enforcement, then handed him $25,000. It was the culmination of a well-executed scam — so successful that the San Gabriel Valley pair behind the scheme decided to try it again, authorities said. They contacted the same Ventura senior, and this time, they asked for double, authorities said. But the victim, realizing he’d been duped, had reached out to police. And the scammers contacted him right when he was in the middle of an interview with detectives, authorities said. In the end, Shaohua Sun, 39, of Monterey Park and Yanwen Gu, 40, of Rosemead were arrested by Ventura police detectives and pleaded guilty to conspiracy to commit elder abuse.
