The Moms Who Sponcon Their Daughters’ First Periods

The Moms Who Sponcon Their Daughters’ First Periods

The world of momfluencers is, to put it mildly, a highly fraught one. With the rise of trad wives like the beauty queen/rancher Hannah Neeleman, aka Ballerina Farm, as well as the 24-year-old model and mother of four Nara Smith, there’s never been more pressure on moms on the internet to present a pristine, highly idealized image of motherhood. But mothers who choose to post their kids on social media also must contend with an endless onslaught of judgment, as well as the risk of their kids being subjected to online predators. Why are we so obsessed with moms on the internet—and what impact does parenting in public have on the women themselves and their children? This is the driving question behind Fortesa Latifi’s new book Like, Follow, Subscribe: Influencers and the Cost of a Childhood Online, a deep dive into the thorny world of trad wives, family vloggers, and kiddie content creators. Latifi, an investigative journalist, raises serious ethical questions about parents broadcasting their kids online, particularly when they may be too young to …

How To Help Boys Deal With Anger

How To Help Boys Deal With Anger

The original version of this story was published on HuffPost at an earlier date. When I found out I was having my first boy five years ago, I was elated and excited … and then worried about anger. There had recently been yet another school shooting, followed by yet another rash of headlines about boys, guns and rage. I understand the roots of that kind of violence are deeply complex, and that in my own life I am surrounded by loving, empathetic men. But I was also a hormonal soon-to-be first-time mom (who, in hindsight, was probably grappling with a touch of perinatal anxiety). I worried that I would raise an angry young man. I was not alone. Concerns about boys and anger abound, as comedian and writer Michael Ian Black captured in his viral 2018 New York Times opinion piece The Boys Are Not All Right. “The man who feels lost but wishes to preserve his fully masculine self has only two choices: withdrawal or rage,” he wrote. The story has more than 2,100 …

Dad Teaches Neighborhood Boys About True Masculinity With Everyday Tasks

Dad Teaches Neighborhood Boys About True Masculinity With Everyday Tasks

Much of the world is still hung up on traditional views of masculinity that suggest men’s value comes from being breadwinners, and they shouldn’t show emotion if they don’t want to look weak. This has backed men into what researchers called a “man box.” Rather than focusing on outdated ideas of strength and what it means to be a man, one dad decided to teach boys in his community about how to navigate real life. He started a mentorship program to teach boys how to do everything from grocery shopping to behaving well in a restaurant. Inspired by his own upbringing, he hopes that the boys he leads will grow into good men because of his lessons. A dad went viral for teaching a group of neighborhood boys how to grocery shop the right way. In a series of videos on his page, a content creator and dad named King Randall has drawn widespread praise for creating a mentorship program called The X for Boys in Albany, Georgia. In one of his most popular videos, …

Too Much Advice Is Making Us Worse at Parenting

Too Much Advice Is Making Us Worse at Parenting

“Can you see the ways that external advice can exacerbate parental anxiety by creating unrealistic standards and fueling a sense of inadequacy? It isn’t that it causes parental anxiety, per se, as parenting is naturally full of protective urges, but it certainly has played a significant part in amplifying parental overwhelm.” This is a theme I explore in my upcoming book, The Parenting Paradox, in which I reflect on the correlation between expert parenting advice and uncertain parenting. I recently participated in a podcast interview about over-professionalizing parenting. It’s a topic that resonates with me so it’s been good to have opportunities to name what so many parents are quietly experiencing as a norm—that raising children has shifted from a lived relationship into something that feels more like a complex, high-stakes profession. Much of how I think about this has been shaped by Murray Bowen’s family systems theory, which highlights the impact parents have on emotional dynamics—not through techniques but through their own functioning. For over a century, external advice and marketing have entered the …

Parents Of Highly Intelligent Kids Do These 7 Things At Home Very Differently, Says College Advisor

Intelligence is widely objective, characterized by creativity, curiosity, and even genetics — there’s not one single way to embody high intelligence, to measure it, or to seek it, even if you’re a professional.  “Intelligence reflects the general ability to process information, which promotes learning, understanding, reasoning, [and] problem-solving,” Dr. Linda S. Gottfredson, professor of education at the University of Delaware in Newark, told WebMD. However, there are ways parents can help to allow all of the traits that influence intelligence to flourish. “I’ve been surrounded by incredibly smart people, in high school, college, and even graduate school,” college advisor YJ Heo on TikTok explained in a recent video on cultivating high intelligence in your children.  “I’m not a parent, but this is what I’ve learned from these highly successful people.” Heo offered specific guidance for parents who want to prioritize learning and scholarly pursuits in their kids. Parents of highly intelligent kids do these 7 things at home very differently: 1. They embrace worldly dinner table discussions Kids are kids — of course — and they …
