The career ladder is broken. Here’s what replaces it.

The career ladder is broken. Here’s what replaces it.

For decades, the formula for career success was simple: go to school, get a job, climb the ladder. But the ladder is now collapsing before our eyes. And honestly, good riddance. The career ladder isn’t just an outdated metaphor — it actively blocks people from finding more fulfilling work.  Think about it this way: In school, there are clear markers for success. The goal is to get good grades. This continues into entry-level roles, where workers strive for raises and promotions. Tracked careers like law and consulting are attractive, at least in part, because they offer legible paths for advancement. Rather than having to grapple with what you personally value, you can always reach for the next rung.  I call this “ladder logic.” Ladder logic is the belief that higher is always better — and that progress only counts if other people can see it. Ladder logic creates what William Deresiewicz, a professor of English at Yale University, calls “world-class hoop jumpers.” In a now-famous commencement speech, Deresiewicz observed that his students could memorize any …

When Survival Replaces Childhood | Psychology Today

When Survival Replaces Childhood | Psychology Today

I was recently invited to speak at an online conference on dangerous minds, violence, and the growing sense of chaos across the islands of San Andrés, Old Providence, and Santa Catalina in Colombia. The conversation opened a space that felt honest and necessary, and at the end, I encouraged those listening to write and share how violence had shaped their lives. In the days that followed, many messages began to arrive. Each one carried a story, sometimes brief, sometimes heavy, yet all of them revealed how deeply these experiences continue to affect the archipelago. As I read through them, one message stood out to me more than the others, not because it was louder, but because it revealed something that often remains hidden behind what people later call dangerous behavior. The message came from a young man I will call Victor, 18 years old, who chose to write not only to tell his story but to make sure others could see that a different path is still possible. A Childhood Without Rest The memories he …

VW replaces US ID.4 production with 18mpg Atlas SUV as gas prices spike

VW replaces US ID.4 production with 18mpg Atlas SUV as gas prices spike

VW says it will stop building the ID.4 in the US, and instead replace it with production of a gas-guzzling, pollution-spewing, 18mpg three row land yacht instead. The change comes just as gas prices have risen dramatically and after republicans inflated the price of every EV by $7,500, ensuring Americans have even fewer affordable choices during an affordability crisis. VW announced today that it is “updating its Chattanooga production strategy” for its plant in Tennessee. This will include ending production of the US-built ID.4 EV within the next couple weeks, and instead replacing it with the Atlas. The Atlas is a huge, three-row SUV which gets as little as 18mpg, making it one of the worst gas guzzlers available today. It uses 5-6x as much energy as the ID.4 it’s replacing. Ballooning vehicle sizes have contributed to the US nearing an all-time high in pedestrian deaths, …

Broken EV chargers? This program replaces them for free

Broken EV chargers? This program replaces them for free

Image: Everged Everged is rolling out a new program aimed at fixing one of the EV industry’s most persistent problems: broken and outdated chargers that never seem to get repaired. The Vienna, Virginia-based energy tech company just launched its Zero Cost Swap Program, which replaces old, unsupported, or broken EV chargers with new, networked equipment – with no upfront cost for the site host. Public charger reliability is still one of the biggest complaints among EV drivers. A lot of those issues trace back to early-generation chargers that are now reaching end of life, along with companies exiting the market and leaving equipment behind. That’s left property owners and site hosts stuck with broken chargers and no clear path to fix them. Advertisement – scroll for more content Everged pays for removing old equipment, installing new chargers, and keeping them running. Under the program, site hosts get: Replacement of legacy or non-functional chargers with new Level 2 or DC fast chargers Full installation and activation covered 24/7 monitoring, maintenance, and driver support Real-time alerts and …
