Heidi Gardner, William H. Macy to Star in ‘The Swimming Lesson’ Movie

Heidi Gardner, William H. Macy to Star in ‘The Swimming Lesson’ Movie

Heidi Gardner and William H. Macy are ready to make a splash with their forthcoming dramedy feature. Gardner and Macy are set to star in the indie film The Swimming Lesson from writer-director Casey Twenter, The Hollywood Reporter has learned. Production is scheduled to begin this summer in Gardner’s hometown of Kansas City. The Swimming Lesson centers on Tay (Gardner), a single mother who leaves behind her complicated life in Los Angeles to return to her childhood home. She winds up embroiled in a custody battle over son Albee, an autistic child who is obsessed with the ocean but terrified of swimming. Macy co-stars as Leonard, Tay’s foul-mouthed father whose blunt nature can sometimes disguise the fact that he remains loyal to his daughter and grandson. Making his solo directorial feature debut, Twenter helmed the project from a script he co-wrote with Jeff Robison. Twenter and Robison previously co-wrote the 2014 drama Rudderless, which marked Macy’s directorial debut and landed distribution after premiering at Sundance. The Swimming Lesson’s producers include Dan Koetting for KP’s Remain …

Is ‘Saturday Night Live’ Kingpin Lorne Michaels’ Successor Already in the Building?

Is ‘Saturday Night Live’ Kingpin Lorne Michaels’ Successor Already in the Building?

Typically the ending of a Saturday Night Live season is accompanied by speculation about who may not return to the show next season, whether it’s newbies who will be unceremoniously booted, longer-tenured cast members whose finale appearances might be coded as a tacit farewell (or at least a retroactive one if they make the call later), or the occasional legend who receives a genuine send-off. But for the show’s not-so-landmark 51st season, little of that is in play. Last fall, Heidi Gardner and Ego Nwodim didn’t return to the show, which also lost Bowen Yang mid-season, leaving far fewer on-the-bubble veterans in their wake. There are always question marks. It seems entirely possible that Chloe Fineman might peace out following her seventh season; while she didn’t get a farewell-coded sketch on the Will Ferrell-hosted finale, she did post a follow-up to her old “show understudy” bit as an Instagram video on Saturday night, as if shrugging off the idea that a sequel might have the opportunity to actually air. And of course, first-season cast members …

Will Ferrell Is Jeffrey Epstein in SNL Season 51 Finale

Will Ferrell Is Jeffrey Epstein in SNL Season 51 Finale

Saturday Night Live closed out its 51st season on Saturday night, where Will Ferrell returned to host the long-running sketch comedy series. Before his opening monologue, the You’re Cordially Invited actor appeared in the cold open alongside James Austin Johnson’s Trump, where he portrayed a ghostly Jeffrey Epstein. Upon returning from his trip to China, the faux president opted to get some rest and took a nap “on this gold bar that Switzerland gave me as a straight-up bribe.” As he drifted off to sleep, a cloudy vision of none other than Epstein popped up, in ghost form. “Don’t worry, Donald, it’s me, your best friend, Jeffrey Epstein,” he said. “Jeffrey, I thought you were dead,” Johnson’s Trump replied. “I am, remember? I killed myself. Wink!” Ferrell’s Epstein added. The two began to catch up, as Trump asked Epstein how heaven was. “It’s really hot,” he revealed. “You know me, I keep busy, mahjong every Wednesday with Stalin and John Wayne Gacy. That guy has stories,” Ferrell’s Epstein said. “What else? Oh, I just wrote …

Matt Damon, Aziz Ansari Lead ‘SNL’ Cold Open as Trump Officials

Matt Damon, Aziz Ansari Lead ‘SNL’ Cold Open as Trump Officials

Matt Damon got a quick start to his hosting duties on Saturday Night Live by first appearing in the episode’s cold open. Damon kicked the episode off by portrayed Brett Kavanaugh, an associate justice of the Supreme Court, alongside Colin Jost as Pete Hegseth. The two Trump-backed officials met up at a bar where they agreed that they “are both kicking ass right now.” “Can you believe I just like started a war?” Jost’s Hegseth asked. “Can you believe I ended abortion? Your body, my choice,” Damon’s Kavanaugh said. The two discussed the ongoing Iran war, however Damon quipped that “the real war right now is the war against male loneliness.” “I just wish there were more people in this administration who could really hang,” he added, to which Aziz Ansari joined to make a surprise cameo once more as Kash Patel, the director of the FBI, after popping up during last week’s episode.  “Does this bar take cash?” Ansari joked. “So, what’s up? Are we wilding out tonight, or what?” Ansari’s Patel continued to …

Connor Storrie Introduces Olivia Rodrigo’s New Song on ‘SNL’

Heated Rivalry star Connor Storrie stopped by Saturday Night Live to introduce host Olivia Rodrigo before she performed a new, unreleased song from her forthcoming album. The 26-year-old, clad in a denim-on-denim ensemble, was met with cheers from the audience as he introduced Rodrigo’s new track “Begged” during the May 2 episode of the sketch comedy show. The “Drop Dead” singer served as the host and musical guest for the episode; Storrie made his own SNL hosting debut earlier this year, helming the Feb. 28 episode. Rodrigo sat upon a swing as she sang the mint track, which is part of her third studio album, You seem pretty sad for a girl so in love. “All that I want is to know undoubtedly that you just have eyes for me,” the sang at the very top of the track. “All that I want is to sit here silently and watch movies on TV.” Earlier in the night, the three-time Grammy Award winner performed her new song “Drop Dead,” and was similarly introduced by a sparkly special guest …

Olivia Rodrigo called back upon some of her career-making moments during her hosting debut on Saturday Night Live. In Rodrigo’s monologue, the 23-year-old singer began by exclaiming that it was “a dream” to be hosting the late night show for the first time. She joked that she “grew up watching the show, and they say your favorite SNL cast is the one you watched as a teenager.” “Mine is Mikey Day, Sarah Sherman, Kenan Thompson and Chloe Fineman,” she said, who are all notably current cast members on the show. “And they all came back this week just to cheer me on. How sweet!” Poking further at her young age, the three-time Grammy winner recounted some of her early projects as a child actor. She previously starred in the Disney Channel series Bizaardvark, and on SNL, she acknowledged that she used to be co-stars with Jake Paul. “When I was 13, I was on a Disney show called Bizaardvark, and we had an incredible cast, which included acting legend Jake Paul,” Rodrigo said. “And we’d …

‘SNL’ Writer Jimmy Fowlie Says Missing Sister ‘No Longer Alive’

‘SNL’ Writer Jimmy Fowlie Says Missing Sister ‘No Longer Alive’

Saturday Night Live writer Jimmy Fowlie, who had asked months ago for the public’s help finding his missing sister, Christina Downer, now says she is “no longer alive.” “The LAPD has informed our family that Christina is no longer alive, and the case has officially transitioned from a missing person to a homicide investigation,” Fowlie wrote in an update on Instagram on Wednesday. “Our prayers for her to be found safely have transformed into prayers for the truth to be revealed and for those responsible to be held accountable.” Fowlie added that he believes Downer’s “phone and social media were compromised” in the weeks before she went missing and those who took her phone “used it to hide the fact she was gone, to ask for money, and to create a false narrative that she was going ‘off the grid.’” “I am sharing this because I believe that whoever is responsible is hoping to erase her in every way possible,” he wrote. “I want to amplify her story in the only way I know how. …
