The Devil Wears Prada 2 review – Meryl Streep returns in a sequel that’s so much better than its terrible marketing

Not even the die-hard loyalists of 2006’s fashion satire The Devil Wears Prada expected much from its return to the big screen: a “cerulean sweater” callback, certainly, alongside some washed out lighting and plenty of egregious product placement. All are, unfortunately, present in The Devil Wears Prada 2 – get ready to play a hypercapitalist Where’s Wally? with all the snuck-in Diet Coke cans. Yet the sequel has also seemingly come out of nowhere to deliver what might be the most trenchant, committed portrait made about the state of contemporary journalism. In the film’s punch-the-air climax, Meryl Streep’s Miranda, the imperious overseer of Runway magazine, locks that X-ray vision of hers onto some gilet-fitted investor (BJ Novak) and lambasts the encroachment of AI into the media space as an affront to “human achievement”. It’s not …

The Devil Wears Prada 2 review: A bigger and bolder sequel that captures the magic of the original

The Devil Wears Prada 2 review: A bigger and bolder sequel that captures the magic of the original

The Devil Wears Prada 2 is in cinemas from 1 May. Add it to your watchlist Belated sequels can be a drag. Freakier Friday, Mary Poppins Returns, Zoolander 2 – you name it, most have failed to capture the magic of an original that arrived sometimes decades before. Twenty years on from its predecessor, The Devil Wears Prada 2 works like a demon to bring us back to the world of Runway magazine, the fictional fashion glossy that has more than a whiff of Vogue about it. The core cast all return, which means Meryl Streep reprises her Oscar-nominated Anna Wintour-alike editor-in-chief Miranda Priestly (or “Beastly” as she gets dubbed). As the sequel begins, Priestly is still at Runway, but the print magazine is tanking; numbers are down, its nearly all gone digital and everything is about clicks. Welcome to the world of journalism in the 21st Century. Worse still, Miranda foolishly endorses a brand that uses sweat shop labour, causing outrage. This “momentary lapse” is going to be costly – so much so the …

Creative Assembly drops first look at the ‘Alien: Isolation’ sequel

Creative Assembly drops first look at the ‘Alien: Isolation’ sequel

Twelve years after the original Alien: Isolation game was released across platforms, on the official “Alien Day” meant to celebrate the beloved franchise, game developers Creative Assembly are returning to the world of xenomorphs and unreliable robots to once again terrify the living daylights out of us. The teaser trailer, aptly titled “False Sense of Security,” does a lot with very little, from the flashing red light in a poorly lit room to the ominous background music and eventual close-up of what looks to be a payphone, with the word “Emergency” appropriately backlit. As you might expect from the makers of the original game, Creative Assembly is clearly reluctant to over-share, relying on atmosphere and sound to do the heavy lifting, but the brief glimpse we get of the background when the door opens suggests the possibility that, unlike the first game, the sequel might also take place on a planet’s surface, perhaps hinting at a much larger game world. Needless to say, we’ll be covering more details about the game’s development and progress as …

Michael Jackson Biopic Director Hints At Sequel As Film Faces Controversy

Michael Jackson Biopic Director Hints At Sequel As Film Faces Controversy

The new biopic about Michael Jackson was generating controversy before it had even hit cinemas. In the lead-up to its release, Michael was torn apart by critics, many of whom took issue with the fact that it comes to an end in 1988, meaning the controversies that surrounded Jackson in his later years – most notably the allegations of child sexual abuse levelled against him – were left unexplored in the film. However, scenes addressing these allegations were originally intended to be included in the film, only to wind up on the cutting room floor, with reports suggesting that they could potentially be included in a sequel to Michael in the future. Could there be a sequel to Michael, addressing the allegations of child sexual abuse levelled against Michael Jackon in his lifetime? Director Antoine Fuqua previously told the New Yorker that he had originally filmed a scene with Jaafar Jackson, depicting a raid on the Neverland ranch in 1993, following allegations of child molestation made against Jackson. It’s been widely reported that, ultimately, these …

The show, which would have seen Alicia Silverstone reprise her role as Cher Horowitz, has been in development since last year. However, Variety reports that CBS Studios and Paramount remain keen on the project, and they may seek to find an alternative home for the series on another platform or streaming service. Silverstone said last August, months after the project was initially announced, that the project is still in the “baby stages.” In an interview with Today, Silverstone said: “I’m really excited about it. I think we’re going to try really hard. The goal is to make it honor what everyone loves about Clueless and Cher.” Alicia Silverstone as Cher Horowitz in the 1995 film ‘Clueless’ (Alamy/PA) She added: “So we want to honor that, but also bring …

Sandra Bullock Addresses Aidan Quinn’s Absence From Practical Magic Sequel

Sandra Bullock Addresses Aidan Quinn’s Absence From Practical Magic Sequel

Sandra Bullock has opened up about why her love interest, played by Aidan Quinn, won’t be back in the upcoming Practical Magic sequel. The Oscar winner’s character, Sally Owens, may have had her happy ever after with Aidan’s Investigator Gary Hallett in the 1998 cult classic, but it looks like their romance may not have worked out after all. “And if you know the original film, you can probably guess why,” Sandra teased when she appeared at CinemaCon alongside her on-screen sister Nicole Kidman last week. Sandra Bullock and Nicole Kidman at CinemaCon Practical Magic follows a multigenerational family of witches whose heartbroken ancestor cursed their bloodline, so that any man who falls in love with them dies a tragic death. At the end of the film, it appeared that the women had beaten the curse, and finally got their happy endings. The upcoming sequel will explore the curse as a new generation of Owens women discover this family secret. Judging from the trailer, Sally and her sister Gillian appear to be single in this …

Will There Be a Michael Jackson Movie Sequel?

Will There Be a Michael Jackson Movie Sequel?

After the audience at this week’s Michael premiere was treated to over two hours’ worth of hits, a title card came across the screen. In shimmery gold lettering, it read: “His Story Continues.” For many of the stakeholders behind the Michael Jackson biopic, or anyone who has read the hundreds of headlines Michael and its unexpectedly protracted production generated over the past year, the proclamation could be read as either a defiant declaration or an open-ended question about the status of a Michael: Part 2. The biopic was never intended to be a two-parter, but for the last year, under a messy cloud of reshoots and pushed release dates, the idea of splitting the film took form. The title card was a relatively last-minute addition, according to a knowledgeable insider, who says it was only put in about a month ago, when the filmmakers and the studios behind Michael began to realize how successful the movie could become. Clearly, studios Lionsgate and Universal, the Jackson Estate, and filmmakers including producer Graham King and director Antoine …

The highly anticipated sequel, in theaters May 1, will see the return of the core original cast, including Meryl Streep, Anne Hathaway, Emily Blunt and Stanley Tucci. Grenier — who played Nate, the toxic boyfriend of Hathaway’s aspiring fashion writer Andy, in the 2006 movie — will not make an appearance. Speaking to Entertainment Weekly about Grenier’s absence, Frankel said: “I had an idea about sneaking him into a cameo, and, in the end, it was just too late in our production schedule to make it happen.” Asked if he could share the idea behind Nate’s planned cameo, the director responded: “No, I probably shouldn’t say. But, I think I’m thrilled that [Grenier] did a …
