While we all wait patiently for Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 to arrive, Treyarch has surprised us all with the announcement of some new ports for Black Ops 1 and 2.
After the wet blanket that BO7 has been, players are thrilled to have the chance to go back to 2010 and 2012 to relive two of the best CoD games ever.
So, for all the details on the upcoming ports, here’s what you need to know about CoD BO1 and BO2.
When will the CoD BO1 and BO2 ports release?
Ports of Call of Duty Black Ops 1 and Black Ops 2 are scheduled to be released in July 2026.
This was confirmed by Treyarch in a post on social media, noting that the games would be ported by Iron Galaxy.
The developer of Killer Instinct made a move into ports and remakes last year with the release of Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 3 + 4.
What platforms will the CoD BO1 and BO2 ports be on?
The Call of Duty Black Ops 1 and Black Ops 2 ports will be available on PlayStation.
While it’s been confirmed that the games are coming to PlayStation, it hasn’t actually been confirmed which PlayStations it will come to.
According to leaks, the ports will be available on PS4, and therefore available to play on PS5 via backwards compatibility, but it’s unknown at present whether the PS5 will be getting native ports.
Unfortunately, it doesn’t seem like the ports will be coming to Xbox or PC. This is likely because both games are already available on both platforms thanks in part to Xbox’s extensive backwards compatibility.
PS4 and PS5 consoles, on the other hand, do not have native support for PS3 games, hence the need for these ports.
What to expect from the CoD BO1 and BO2 ports
According to Treyarch, both ports will include the full campaigns, multiplayer support and Zombies.
That means what you get with these ports is the full package that you remember from the early 2010s.
That’s about it for what we do know, so now it’s on to what we don’t know.
We don’t know if players are going to be able to carry over progress from existing PlayStation saves, though we imagine not.
We also don’t know if crossplay will be enabled, allowing PS players to jump on with players on Xbox and PC, or if the ports will have PS-only multiplayer.
Considering it’s going to be tough enough to get players to jump into the multiplayer of two separate 14- and 16-year-old games, it would be a pretty big missed opportunity not to have crossplay support.
