A celebrity chef’s rooftop steakhouse and a popular hotel in Birmingham city centre have closed their doors with immediate effect. In a notice to customers, operators confirmed that both The Cube Hotel and the Marco Pierre White Steakhouse have ceased trading and will not be reopening.
A notice displayed outside the hotel and rooftop restaurant, both of which had operated from The Cube for the past 15 years, appeared to confirm the abrupt closure of the two venues. It read: “We regret to inform you that, with immediate effect, The Cube Hotel and Marco Pierre White Steakhouse Bar & Grill Birmingham have ceased trading and are now closed.
“We sincerely apologise for any inconvenience and disappointment this may cause.”
The notice added: “The affairs, business and property of MSHA Global Investments Limited (trading as The Cube Hotel) are managed by the joint administrators who act as agents of the company and contract without personal liability.”
The British steakhouse operated under the Marco Pierre White name under a licensing deal with the celebrity chef, and was known for its 360-degree panoramic views of Birmingham from the 25th floor.
It had long been a fixture at The Cube in the Mailbox district, alongside the 52-bedroom hotel, BirminghamLive reports.
Earlier this year, Insider Media reported that Knight Frank had been appointed to sell the hotel — including the franchised restaurant — on behalf of joint administrators Richard Easterby and Nick Simmonds of Quantuma Advisory Ltd.
A source said staff at the Bar and Grill were told about the sudden closure this week.
The news comes the same week that two popular restaurants in London announced closures, leaving many customers “gutted”. The owners of Morito, a tapas restaurant on Hackney Road, spoke about the “significant challenges” facing the hospitality industry as it announced the closure.
Opened in 2016, the East London site was beloved by customers for its small plates. The restaurant was run by husband and wife, Sam and Sam Clark. Although the Hackney location has closed, the Moro restaurant and the Morito site in Exmouth Market will continue operating. The closure on June 14 was revealed in a post on the restaurant’s Instagram page, where the owners explained that the decision had been difficult to make.
Elsewhere in London a Michelin-listed restaurant ranked among England’s top dining destinations is also set to close its doors. The Water House Project, an acclaimed fine dining restaurant in Bethnal Green, East London, will serve its final customers at the end of June after its owners decided not to renew the site’s lease.
