I have a confession, and it’s not exactly flattering: I’m a digital hoarder. At any given moment, my browser is basically a timeline of my week, with unfinished drafts, three different inboxes, several YouTube videos, a half-read tutorial from the weekend, and at least one “temporary” research tab that has somehow survived for days.
For years, that habit came with a pretty obvious tax. My laptop fans would start auditioning for airport duty, while Task Manager looked like evidence from a crime scene. Chrome was usually sitting near the top, with its various processes collectively chewing through 8GB, 10GB, or sometimes even more RAM if I had enough tabs and web apps open.
I had no intention of becoming a disciplined tab closer, so I changed Chrome instead. The setting is called Memory Saver, and it has completely changed how I keep dozens of tabs open without letting them eat the rest of my system alive.
The problem with “just close your tabs”

The standard advice for high browser RAM usage is to close the tabs you aren’t using. That works, but it ignores why I have those tabs open in the first place.
A tab can be a reminder to pay a bill, a citation for an article I’m writing, or a video I plan to watch later. Bookmarks are where links go to die; open tabs are for things that are still alive. Chrome’s permanent tab groups can keep related tabs organized across browsing sessions, which helps with the clutter, but I still want the pages themselves sitting there when I come back to them. Closing everything would solve the memory problem by dismantling the way I work.
The bigger issue is that background tabs can continue occupying memory long after I’ve stopped looking at them. A single page may not matter much, but combine a few dozen articles with Gmail, YouTube, Google Docs, Reddit, and other heavier web apps, and Chrome can end up holding onto gigabytes of RAM for pages I might not revisit for hours.
That’s exactly the kind of workload Memory Saver is designed to rein in.
For my test, I opened 16 tabs across the kind of mix I normally accumulate, including YouTube, Gmail, Google Docs, Reddit, shopping pages, and articles.
Letting Chrome sleep on the job
Maximum mode has no patience for idle tabs
You’ll find Memory Saver under Settings > Performance. Rather than keeping every inactive page fully loaded in memory, Chrome can deactivate tabs you haven’t used for a while. The tab stays exactly where you left it, with its title and favicon, but Chrome frees much of the memory associated with the page until you return.
Turning it on takes only a few clicks:
- Open the three-dot menu and select Settings.
- Click Performance in the sidebar.
- Turn on Memory Saver.
Chrome gives you three levels: Moderate, Balanced, and Maximum. Balanced is the more middle-of-the-road option, while Maximum deactivates unused tabs sooner. I went straight for Maximum because I’d rather wait for an old tab to reload occasionally than keep dozens of dormant pages sitting in memory.
That’s where my 16-tab test made the difference obvious. Before the inactive tabs had been deactivated, Chrome was using around 6GB. After Maximum had enough time to work through the same set of tabs, usage fell to about 2GB. Nothing had disappeared from my tab bar. Every page was still sitting where I’d left it, but roughly 2GB of RAM was available for the rest of my system again.
Chrome also makes some of this visible without requiring you to stare at Windows Task Manager. Tab hover cards can show how much memory individual pages are using, and Chrome’s own Task Manager lets you see which browser processes are consuming memory and CPU. If you have Chrome’s inactive-tab appearance enabled, deactivated tabs are also marked with a ring around the site icon. Two tabs sitting next to each other can have wildly different memory footprints.
The RAM comes with a small trade-off
Saving RAM means some tabs wake up confused
Memory Saver gets that RAM back by giving up some of the instant responsiveness you’d otherwise get from keeping a page loaded. If you click a tab that Chrome has deactivated, the page has to wake back up. Depending on the site, that may mean a brief reload before you’re back where you were. On a normal article or reference page, I barely notice it. Heavier web apps can make the pause more obvious and annoying.
Chrome also tries to avoid deactivating tabs that are actively doing something important, including pages playing audio or video and tabs with partially filled forms. Even so, I wouldn’t trust every stateful web app to restore itself perfectly after being unloaded. Some sites simply aren’t good at bringing you back to exactly where you were after a reload.
That’s where Always keep these sites active comes in. You’ll find it on the same Settings > Performance page. Click Add, and Chrome gives you two choices. Add current sites lets you pick from websites you already have open, while Add sites manually lets you type in the address yourself.
It’s worth being specific here. Adding a main domain can also keep its subdomains active, so exempting something broad like google.com would cover far more than a single Google service. If Google Docs is the page I’m worried about, I’d rather exempt only what I actually need than give a whole family of sites permanent immunity from Memory Saver.
I use those exceptions sparingly. My reference articles, shopping pages, Reddit threads, and other tabs I haven’t touched in a while are fair game. Anything where preserving the current session matters can stay awake.
I’m keeping Maximum turned on
Memory Saver doesn’t make Chrome lightweight; that’s not really the goal. Modern browsers use memory to keep pages responsive, and unused RAM doesn’t earn bonus points for sitting empty.
If your laptop is struggling while dozens of tabs sit untouched, Memory Saver is worth a visit. Maximum has worked best for the way I browse, and I’ll happily take the occasional reload if the alternative is giving several gigabytes of RAM to pages I haven’t looked at in hours.
If you want more control over exactly when tabs get unloaded, Auto Tab Discard does that more than Chrome’s built-in Memory Saver, including configurable inactivity timers and more detailed discard rules. I haven’t needed to go that far yet. Maximum gets me most of what I want without adding another extension to Chrome.
