Oscar nominations in full: Sinners smashes record with 16 nods alongside One Battle After Another and Hamnet

Ryan Coogler’s Sinners has become the most nominated film in Academy Awards history after receiving a staggering 16 nods – including in almost every major category.

The hugely acclaimed vampire movie – which was also a major box office hit – is one of 10 films which will compete for the best picture trophy at the ceremony in March, while Coogler is up for best director, and three of its stars (Michael B Jordan, Wunmi Mosaku and Delroy Lindo) are all in the running across the various acting categories.

As expected, other films that performed well included Paul Thomas Anderson’s One Battle After Another and Chloé Zhao’s Hamnet – which scored 13 and eight nominations respectively. Those two films are arguably still the frontrunners to pick up the top prize, although the sheer number of nominations for Sinners suggests that it could pose a major challenge as well.

Elsewhere, Marty Supreme, Sentimental Value and Frankenstein enjoyed plenty of success – gaining nine nominations each – while F1 was something of a surprise entry in the best picture category.

The Academy’s welcome embrace of international movies also continued, with place for both Brazilian drama The Secret Agent and the aforementioned Norwegian film Sentimental Value in best picture. However others such as It Was Just an Accident and Sirat had to settle for a place in the best international feature category.

As ever there were a couple of notable snubs – including Hamnet’s Paul Mescal and One Battle After Another’s Chase Infiniti – while some films were looked over entirely, including The Testament of Ann Lee and No Other Choice, both of which can consider themselves incredibly unfortunate to have no place in the conversation.

These nominations were also the first to include the brand new casting category, with Hamnet, Marty Supreme, One Battle After Another, The Secret Agent and Sinners the five films to receive Oscar nods in this discipline.

I studied medicine in Brighton and qualified as a doctor and for the last 2 years been writing blogs. While there are are many excellent blogs devoted to the topics of faith, humanism, atheism, political viewpoints, and wider kinds of rationalism and philosophical doubt, those are not the only focus here.Im going to blog about what ever comes to my mind in a day.
