Iran offers to reopen Strait of Hormuz if US lifts its blockade and the war ends, officials say

CAIRO (AP) — Iran offered to end its chokehold on the Strait of Hormuz if the U.S. lifts its blockade on the country and ends the war in a proposal that would postpone discussions on the Islamic Republic’s nuclear program, two regional officials said Monday. U.S. President Donald Trump seems unlikely to accept the offer, which was passed to the Americans by Pakistan and would leave unresolved the disagreements that led the U.S. and Israel to go to war on Feb. 28. And U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio appeared to rule out any deal that excludes Iran’s nuclear program. “We can’t let them get away with it,” Rubio said in a Fox News interview Monday. “We have to ensure that any deal that is made, any agreement that is made, is one that definitively prevents them from sprinting towards a nuclear weapon at any point.” With a fragile ceasefire in place, the U.S. and Iran are locked in a standoff over the strait, through which a fifth of the world’s traded oil and gas …

Iran offers to reopen Strait of Hormuz if US lifts its blockade and the war ends: Officials

IRANIAN FOREIGN MINISTER HOLDS TALKS AS NEGOTIATIONS STALL Trump last week indefinitely extended the ceasefire that the US and Iran agreed to on Apr 7, which has largely halted fighting.  But a permanent settlement remains elusive in the war that has killed thousands of people. Iran’s state-run IRNA news agency said Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi landed in St Petersburg on Monday morning ahead of a meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin. “It is a good opportunity for us to consult with our Russian friends about the developments that have occurred in relation to the war during this period and what is happening now,” Araghchi said in a video interview posted by IRNA. It comes as Pakistan has been seeking to revive stalled talks between Iran and the US, and negotiations had been expected in Islamabad over the weekend.  Instead, Trump called off a trip by his envoys and suggested the talks could take place by phone instead. Over the weekend, Araghchi made two stops in Pakistan and a visit to Oman, which shares the strait …

World War 1 airport set to reopen after £160million project | UK | Travel

Doncaster Sheffield Airport is set to reopen this year following a £160million redevelopment scheme. The airport stopped operations in 2022 and was left partially abandoned after operator Peel Group considered it financially unviable. The ambitious reopening plan, supported by local authorities, will see the airport resume cargo operations this year and commercial passenger services by 2027. Doncaster Sheffield Airport is currently working with operator Fly Doncaster to identify suitable airport operational partners. Simon Hinchley, Executive Director for Airport Operations at FlyDoncaster, said: “As we work towards re-opening Doncaster Sheffield Airport, our focus is firmly on building a safe, efficient and operationally robust airport that is ready to serve a broad range of users from day one.” “South Yorkshire’s Mayor, Oliver Coppard, and Council Leaders have taken a historic decision to re-open Doncaster Sheffield Airport, approving a £160million funding package that will see commercial flights return to the region.” According to Fly Doncaster, the renovated terminal will cater for up to four million passengers. The airport is forecast to generate £5billion for the regional economy by …

Iran mocks EU calls to reopen Strait of Hormuz – POLITICO

Iran mocks EU calls to reopen Strait of Hormuz – POLITICO

Western leaders have urged the Iranian regime to reopen the waterway, through which a fifth of the world’s oil and liquefied natural gas transits. Prolonged closure is driving up global oil prices and damaging economic growth prospects across the EU.   Kallas, the EU’s foreign policy chief, wrote on X that “under international law, transit through waterways like the Strait of Hormuz must remain open and free of charge.” But the Iranian regime poured scorn on Kallas’ assertion. “Oh, that ‘international law’?! The one that the EU dusts off to lecture others while quietly green-lighting a U.S.-Israeli war of aggression — and looking the other way on atrocities against Iranians?!” Esmaeil Baqaei, spokesperson at the Iranian foreign ministry, wrote on X. In a stinging rebuke, Baqaei said that “no rule of international law forbids Iran, the coastal State, from taking necessary measures to stop the Strait of Hormuz being used for waging military aggression against Iran.” He added that “unconditional transit passage” in Hormuz is not possible after “U.S./Israeli aggression brought U.S. military assets into …

Iconic L.A. venue the Magic Castle set to reopen following roof fire

The outcome could have been very different after a fire broke out Tuesday at a well-known Hollywood venue, but the site emerged relatively unscathed, the owner said, chalking it up to “true Magic Castle magic!” Randy Pitchford, owner of the Magic Castle, confirmed Wednesday that damage was minimal after a roof fire flared up at the property around 5 p.m. The more than 100-year-old Victorian-style building features pieces of historic art, artifacts, a museum and a library — all of which could have turned to ash, Pitchford said. “It’s a wonder and a miracle — true Magic Castle magic!” he wrote in a statement on X. “The top floor offices and attic are pretty wrecked, but ALL of our important history [is] safe, sound, and undamaged!” Pitchford confirmed that no employees or guests were injured. Ben Roman, an employee at the Magic Castle, said there were about 200 people inside the building when the fire began. “Those of us in the office smelled smoke and immediately sprung into action and called [the Los Angeles Fire …

As Jerusalem holy sites reopen, Jews, Muslims and Christians flock to pray

JERUSALEM (RNS) — Thousands of Jews, Muslims and Christians flocked to the Old City of Jerusalem on Thursday (April 9) to pray at the Western Wall, Al-Aqsa Mosque and the Church of the Holy Sepulchre, the day after a two-week ceasefire was announced in the war between the United States, Israel and Iran. On Feb. 28, Israeli authorities closed all three holy sites to everyone but the clergy who work there, out of fears that Iranian missiles or a siren-triggered stampede could harm large numbers of worshippers. Some Muslim and Christian leaders had demanded that Al-Aqsa and the Holy Sepulchre be open to the public, despite there being no bomb shelters in the immediate vicinity. But on Thursday, for the first time in 40 days, Old City merchants opened their shops in the hopes of making a few sales, while local people and some tourists appeared more interested in reaching the holy sites than buying jewelry or souvenirs — which included hats with images of President Donald Trump and the words “Make Israel Great Again.” …

Iran to reopen Hormuz ‘to those who obey our new laws’

Iran to reopen Hormuz ‘to those who obey our new laws’

The Strait of Hormuz will only reopen to those who comply with Iran’s new laws, Tehran has said. Ebrahim Azizi, the head of the Iranian parliament’s national security committee, said the passage would “certainly reopen” but not to the United States. The Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) has effectively shut the strait, which serves as a conduit for a fifth of the world’s oil, since the start of the war in the Middle East on Feb 28. Only vessels from nations “friendly” to the regime and certain ships which have been charged a £1.5m fee by the IRGC have been allowed to pass through the shipping lane.
