‘Sinners’ makeup dept. head Ken Diaz is a three-time Oscar nominee. His journey merits its own movie

‘Sinners’ makeup dept. head Ken Diaz is a three-time Oscar nominee. His journey merits its own movie

Makeup artist Ken Diaz’s life is worthy of its own Hollywood story — or better yet, a Chicano epic. At 16, Diaz was caught sneaking into the Paramount sound stage, just to see where they shot the “Brady Bunch.” Years later, he swept the floors of Universal Studios before wrangling ostriches and chasing lions on the set of the 1981 film “Roar.” The wild animals mauled and injured multiple cast members; in one instance, Diaz had to stop director Noel Marshall from internally bleeding. This was his first gig as a professional makeup artist. Now, Diaz is nominated for his third Academy Award in makeup and hairstyling for his role as makeup department head in Ryan Coogler’s “Sinners,” alongside Mike Fontaine and Shunika Terry, making him the most nominated Latino in the category since the category’s establishment in 1982. Born in East L.A. and raised in Pico Rivera, Diaz grew up a shy, dyslexic kid with artistic inclination that often didn’t align with traditional schooling, resulting in harsh beatings by his father. At one point …

2026 ASC Awards Full Winners List

2026 ASC Awards Full Winners List

One Battle After Another’s Michael Bauman has won the American Society of Cinematographers’ top prize for work on a theatrical feature-film, setting the Oscar nominee up as the front-runner to win the Academy Award in exactly one week. To this point, the race has been considered a nailbiter: Bauman also won the BAFTA, Train Dreams’ Adolpho Veloso won the Spirit Award, and Sinners’ Autumn Durald Arkapaw dominated the critics’ awards circuit (she’d be the first woman ever to win the cinematography Oscar). The list of nominees was rounded out by Frankenstein’s Dan Laustsen and Marty Supreme’s Darius Khondji, both of whom are also nominated at the Oscars.  This is the second time in three years that the ASC Awards and the Academy landed on the same lineup of cinematography nominees. (Last year, the guild oddly expanded its nominations slate from the usual five to seven, but still blanked the Oscar-favored Emilia Pérez.) When it comes to winners, however, the voting bodies have matched for best cinematography only six out of the last 10 years, going …

Oscars 2026: The case for Sinners to win best picture

Oscars 2026: The case for Sinners to win best picture

Add Sinners to your watchlist From the moment Sinners hit cinema screens back in April of last year, it was clear that it would be a contender in the Hollywood awards race. There was immediate critical acclaim for everything from storytelling and soundtrack to casting and cinematography, which culminated in 16 Oscar nominations – the most received by a single film in history. But now, as 98th Academy Awards draws near, Sinners has increasingly felt like a worthy winner of the best picture Oscar. Yet another impressive outing from writer/director Ryan Coogler (Black Panther, Fruitvale Station) and star Michael B Jordan (Creed, Without Remorse), Sinners is set in Jim Crow-era Mississippi and follows twin brothers Smoke and Stack (Jordan) as they return to their hometown and open a juke joint, which reunites them with friends and loved ones like their cousin, Sammie ‘Preacher Boy’ Moore (Miles Caton). But what starts as a night of celebration for the Blues soon descends into destruction as the vampire Remmick (Jack O’Connell) arrives with a trail of blood in …

Wunmi Mosaku Calls Out BBC Over Baftas N-Word Tic Broadcast

Wunmi Mosaku Calls Out BBC Over Baftas N-Word Tic Broadcast

During the awards show, which took place last month, Tourette’s syndrome campaigner John Davidson experienced an involuntary tic while Wunmi’s co-stars Michael B Jordan and Delroy Lindo were presenting on stage, resulting in him shouting the N-word from the audience. In the week that followed, both Bafta and the BBC faced scrutiny about the incident, particularly after the racial slur was included in the national broadaster’s coverage of the event, which aired on a two-hour time delay. Asked for her “take” during an interview with Entertainment Tonight at Sunday’s Actor Awards, Wunmi began: “I was there and it was painful to have that celebration kind of really tainted for me.” While the British actor was quick to state that she holds “no hard feelings towards John Davidson at all”, she pointed out that Bafta has a “lot of lessons to learn” following what transpired at this year’s ceremony. Echoing comments made by Sinners cast member Jayme Lawson earlier in the weekend, Wunmi continued: “It felt exploitative and performative to have someone there without the full …

‘You know when you’ve hit it – it’s a transformation’: Ruth E Carter on building the bold world of Sinners | Film

‘You know when you’ve hit it – it’s a transformation’: Ruth E Carter on building the bold world of Sinners | Film

Ruth E Carter’s costumes were a crucial part of establishing the identities of the two identical twins, both played by Michael B Jordan, in multi-Oscar-nominated Sinners. Particularly the hats. One brother, Stack, wore a red fedora. The other brother, Smoke, wore a blue newsboy flat cap. Finding the hats was a critical moment in the film’s backstory. When director Ryan Coogler first saw Jordan try on Stack’s red fedora, bought by Carter in Los Angeles’s Melrose Avenue, “he was like – that’s it. Then he goes up into the rest of the office, and people are coming down, like, ‘Ryan’s talking upstairs about a red hat?’ You know when you’ve hit it – it’s a transformation.” This is just a small example of the canny period world-building that has made Carter the most-garlanded Black woman in Oscars history, and the owner of a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame (her family were in attendance, she says, of its Covid-era unveiling, while Oprah and Eddie Murphy dialled in via Zoom). Her work on Coogler’s genre-squashing, …

‘Sinners’ Wins But Will It Impact Oscars?

‘Sinners’ Wins But Will It Impact Oscars?

For months, One Battle After Another was winning everything, including the top prizes at the Critics Choice Awards on Jan. 4, Golden Globe Awards on Jan. 11, Directors Guild Awards on Feb. 7, BAFTA Awards on Feb. 22 and Producers Guild Awards on Saturday. But at the Actor Awards (formerly the SAG Awards) on Sunday — the first day of March, and smack dab in the middle of the weeklong final round of Oscars voting — the other big Warner Bros. contender, Sinners, showed major signs of life. Indeed, Ryan Coogler’s blockbuster genre film walked away with the prize for best cast — vanquishing not only One Battle but also Hamnet, Marty Supreme and Frankenstein — and, in the night’s biggest surprise, best actor for Michael B. Jordan, calling into question the conventional wisdom about not only the best picture Oscar race, but also the long-presumed frontrunner status of Marty Supreme’s Timothée Chalamet in the best actor Oscar race (which was also dinged at last weekend’s BAFTA Awards). Before going any further, it must be acknowledged …

Actors Awards: Sinners shakes up Oscars race as Jessie Buckley remains undefeated | Ents & Arts News

Sinners triumphed at this year’s Actors Awards, with the vampire horror winning best ensemble and best actor for Michael B Jordan. The awards show, which has rebranded after formerly being known as the Screen Actors Guild Awards, is seen as a decent bellwether to the Oscars, which take place next month. While Paul Thomas Anderson’s One Battle After Another has been widely expected to take best picture at the Academy Awards, following wins at the Directors Guild, the Golden Globes, the Producers Guild Awards and the BAFTAs, this nod at the Actors Awards puts Ryan Coogler’s movie firmly back into contention. Image: Viola Davis announces Jordan’s win. Pic: Reuters A commercial and critical success, Sinners has already made history with a record 16 Oscar nominations, and its best ensemble win boosts its chances to take best picture. Jordan, who beat category favourite Timothee Chalamet, received a standing ovation as he took his prize, which was presented by Viola Davis. The 39-year-old called his win for his portrayal of Mississippi twins Smoke and Stack, “pretty cool”, …

Actor Awards 2026: Full Winners List As Sinners And The Studio Triumph

Actor Awards 2026: Full Winners List As Sinners And The Studio Triumph

After an awards season that’s so far been pretty all over the place in terms of who’s won what, Sunday night’s Actor Awards has thrown out some interesting new frontrunners with less than two weeks to go until the Oscars. Over the last two months, awards in major acting categories have been handed out in pretty much all directions (with the exception of Best Actress, with Jessie Buckley’s win now looking even more locked in). But this year’s Actor Awards – previously known as the SAG Awards until this year’s name change – has given us a better idea how things could go down at the Oscars later this month. Sunday’s ceremony saw Amy Madigan and Sean Penn winning for their supporting performances in Weapons and One Battle After Another, respectively. Meanwhile, Sinners was the top-winning film of the night, triumphing in Outstanding Performance By A Cast In A Motion Picture, with Michael B Jordan’s Best Actor victory making Timothée Chalamet’s Oscar win a little less of a sure thing. Michael B Jordan, Amy Madigan …

Actor Awards 2026 Best and Worst Moments

Actor Awards 2026 Best and Worst Moments

The 2026 Actor Awards were not only filled with plenty of comedic comments but also several heartfelt ones. From Sinners star Delroy Lindo‘s emotional acceptance speech and Weapons actress Amy Madigan‘s joke about the trophy’s genitalia to Michael B. Jordan fulfilling his lifelong dream with his first win and Seth Rogen recalling sweet memories of the late Catherine O’Hara on the set of The Studio, here are some of the most memorable moments from Sunday night’s awards ceremony honoring actors. Michael B. Jordan’s First Win for ‘Sinners’ Fulfills Lifelong Dream Michael B. Jordan won the Actor Award for best actor for his role in Sinners. Jordan, who stars as twins in Ryan Coogler’s Warner Bros. film, hugged his mother and took to the stage to accept the award. “I wasn’t expecting that. I’m so honored and privileged to be nominated in categories with people and actors and humans that I love, and I love their work and what they contribute to our craft and just rise to has been unbelievable,” he said. So, thank you for welcoming …
