Daniel Day-Lewis Is Going Through a Khaki Phase

Daniel Day-Lewis Is Going Through a Khaki Phase

For all of his acting bonafides (to the tune of a shellful of Academy Awards and BAFTAs), the reason we here at GQ keep coming back to Daniel Day-Lewis is simple: We really like the way he dresses. His off-duty workwear outfits, pre-trend hoop earrings, and enviable off-beat tailoring have made him a longstanding fit god around these parts. The only problem, then, is that the retired actor rarely makes public appearances. But you know how it goes—absence, it makes the heart grow fonder.

It’s with great joy that we announce that Mr. Day-Lewis was spotted on the streets of New York City this week. For years, the thespian has turned the concrete jungle into his private runway, and he did it yet again during a stroll with his wife, the filmmaker Rebecca Miller, on Thursday. Walking arm in arm with his better half, Day-Lewis wore a full khaki ensemble: a four-pocket zip-up flight jacket by Americana repro brand The Real McCoy’s, chinos, and desert boots. He accessorized with a yellow neckerchief and a trucker hat from the Japanese moto brand Yoshimura—a holdover from his occasional post-swag proclivities.

This monochromatic tan color story has become a signature for the actor. In recent years, he’s sported a beat-to-hell tan Carhartt Detroit with complementary double knee pants, breaking up the beige monotony with a denim shirt. Last September, he did the balmy-weather version with a pale short-sleeve button-up, straight-leg khakis, and black Hokas. More recently, at a red carpet for Anemone, his son Ronan Day-Lewis’s feature directorial debut (in which Daniel broke his self-imposed acting retirement to appear), the Oscar winner wore a khaki double-breasted suit jacket with matching pleated pants, with a patterned scarf tied around his hips.

To be clear, Day-Lewis deviates from khaki now and again—his velvety, navy-hued corduroy suit from 2024 was a standout). What are the chances that his now-signature hue might be the result of getting a color analysis? (Mine is a cool winter, if anyone was wondering). But it’s more likely that the actor simply has a knack for wearing out the things he really likes. Let’s just hope we don’t have to wait long before we get to see his next outfit.
