Soap fans will have to wait a little longer for their next trip to the Dales and the cobbles, as Emmerdale and Coronation Street are both missing from ITV’s schedule this Wednesday (12 August). The soaps have once again been pushed aside to make room for live football, with ITV broadcasting a pre-season friendly game between Manchester United and Leeds United. The latest schedule change comes after an already disruptive summer for soaps and their viewers, with football coverage causing several alterations to ITV’s usual evening line-up. Both Emmerdale and Coronation Street have been affected by sporting events at various points this year, including changes prompted by the 2026 FIFA World Cup. Soap fans, there’s some bad news. Sports coverage is about to disrupt scheduled editions of Coronation Street and Emmerdale. The soaps usually air in what ITV dub as “power hour”, each weekday evening at 8pm. This new time slot was introduced to provide consistency and to help navigate the disruption that the footy causes annually. However, since then, both serial dramas have been repeatedly shifted to accommodate other programmes. Today (Wednesday 12 August) is no exception, as the broadcaster will air coverage of the Manchester United v Leeds United pre-season friendly match from 7pm. Kick-off at the Croke Park in Dublin is at 7.30pm with analysis from John O’Shea and Michael Brown. ITV has unveiled a new conceptual trailer for Emmerdale ahead of the much-anticipated wedding of Dawn Fletcher (Olivia Bromley) and Joe Tate (Ned Porteous) later this month. It’s already been a dramatic few weeks for the characters, with Joe becoming aware of her brief kiss with ex-hubby Billy (Jay Kontzle). He was reluctant to believe that she’d betray him, and just hours later, Billy was brutally attacked and placed into a coma. We’re still yet to find out who was responsible, though Joe has been allowed to leave the police station. Dawn is now caught in what the soap describes as an “emotional tug-of-war”, unsure of what to believe and ultimately, who she wants to spend the rest of her life with. Last week, the factory worker was found unconscious on the floor of the Caleb Miligan International depot with blood spilling from his head. It happened just hours after Joe Tate (Ned Porteous) had been made aware of his brief kiss with ex-wife Dawn Fletcher (Olivia Bromley).
